The Adventure Podcast Episode 9: The Logistics of Skiing to the North and South Pole

The latest episode of The Adventure Podcast is now live and available to download in all of the usual places, including iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher. I've also embodied the episode below for those who prefer to listen on directly from their computers. This week we return to our usual format after taking a week off for some travel and following a pair of shorter episodes that focused only on the latest adventure news.

The main topic of discussion this week is the differences between skiing to the North and South Pole. On paper, the two expeditions seem very similar, but in reality they are about as far apart as the poles themselves. We delve deep into these differences as we discuss things like climate change, "negative drift," and being stalked by polar bears. Of course, we also share some thoughts on gear items we're currently using, and talk about the latest stories from the world outdoor exploration and adventure.

As always, thanks for listening and don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. If you have any feedback or would like to send us a question, don't hesitate to reach out by email either.

The Adventure Podcast Episode 8: More Adventure News!

The latest episode of The Adventure Podcast is now available for download. Like last week, this is a solo effort that strays from our usual format. It is also shorter than most of our other episodes as well, concentrating on just four or five important news stories that took place in the past week.

As usual, you can listen to the show online, or find it on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and Stitcher. I've also embedded the episode below for those who don't use any of those formats. We're currently working on getting the show syndicated in Spotify too, but we are still in the process of getting approval.

Last week our show as an abbreviated one because my co-host Dave Adlard had a few things to deal with on his end. This week, I have been dealing with some family issues as well, which prevented us from being able to record at our regular time. Next week, both of us will be traveling, but we may do yet another short "news" episode before hopefully getting back to our regular routine after that. Thanks for your patience and for listening.

The Adventure Podcast Episode 7: Adventure News

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the latest episode of The Adventure Podcast is now available for download. As usual, you'll find it on the web, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and Stitcher. I've also embedded the show in this post so you can listen to it as well.

In this episode I am flying solo, so rather than boring everyone too much, we just picked a few important adventure news items from the past week or so and shared them with listeners. This is a much shorter episode  than usual too, running just 17 minutes in length. Next week, we'll be back to the usual format, before we goin on hiatus for a bit while I travel and Dave takes care of a major project on his end too.

As always, thanks for listen. If you have any feedback, be sure to drop us a note at theadventurepod@gmail.com or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

The Adventure Podcast Episode 3 is Now Available

Just a quick note to let readers and listeners know that the latest edition of The Adventure Podcast is now available for download and to listen to online. For those who haven't had a chance to listen in on the show just yet, it is kind of an audio version of this blog, sharing news, gear reviews, and opinions on what is happening in the outdoor and exploration space.

On this week's episode, my cohost Dave Adlard and I discuss a number of big topics, including fallout over Nepal's decision to ban solo and disabled climbers. We also take a look at a 10-month long training course to prepare students to become outdoor guides, which has both of us wishing we were 20 years younger. Our main topic is tips and tricks for cutting weight from your backpack and luggage, and we take a look ahead to Outdoor Retailer next week as well. We wrap up the show by answering another gear question from a listener and share our favorite gear for the week.

As always, you can listen to the show online, or subscribe to it in iTunes, Google Play Store, and through Stitcher. For those who just want to sample it, I've also embedded the latest episode below. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.

Also, you can find us on Facebook and Twitter, and we welcome any feedback or questions via email too.  Thanks for giving us a shot!

The Adventure Podcast Episode 2 is Now Available

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Episode 2 of The Adventure Podcast was released yesterday. In this episode, my co-host Dave Adlard and I talk about the latest adventure news with a look at some Antarctic expeditions, climbing teams heading to Everest and K2 this winter, and more. As usual, we also talk about useful gear and share some items that we've both been using in the field.

Our main topic this week is the 10 Essentials of Hiking, with discussion on whether or not they are still viable in the 21st century (Hint: They Are!) and out take on how the list has changed and evolved over the years. Throughout this segment we continue to talk about important gear and share some ideas on things that you can take with you into the backcountry.

For thos who are interested in checking out this latest project of mine here's how you can listen in:

  • If you just want to listen on your computer then click here to get a web version of the show, complete with an audio player, episode description, and so on. It works great, it just isn't quite so portable.
  • iOS users (iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc.) can subscribe to the show in iTunes by searching for "The Adventure Podcast," but it can still be hard to find. Here's a direct link
  • Android users can find us in the Google Play Store by again searching for the title of the show. But, to save time, here's another direct link
  • If you use Stitcher to listen to your podcasts on any platform, we're also available there. If search doesn't work, here's the direct link for Stitcher users.
You can also follow the show on Facebook and Twitter. Comments, suggestions, and questions can be emailed to theadventurepod@gmail.com. In fact, we're looking for questions to answer on the air, and had our first one just this week.

Thanks for listening. I hope you'll check us out and enjoy the topics.

How to Listen to The Adventure Podcast

As our fledgling podcast starts to get off the ground, I've had a couple of emails from readers asking how to listen to the show. When we did our pilot episode a few weeks back, we used a different podcast hosting platform to get the show out there. We've since switched to a different platform that we'll use moving forward, which means the links I originally shared may not be working for you. So, here's how you can listen to The Adventure Podcast:

We just posted Episode 1 a few days back and will now be on a break through the holidays, but new shows will be coming in the first part of January. We also have plans to do daily shows from Outdoor Retailer as well, with our thoughts on the latest and greatest gear.

My cohost Dave Adlard and I are having a lot of fun with the show so far, and we hope you'll give us a shot as we continue making weekly episodes in 2018. Until then, enjoy the rest of the year and Happy Holidays!

The Adventure Podcast Episode 1 is Now Available!

I'm proud to announce that Episode 1 of The Adventure Podcast is now available. In this episode, my cohost David Adlard and I talk about a wide variety of subjects, including the all-star American climbing team currently in the Antarctic, racing the Southern Ocean in a sailboat, and some of our current favorite gear. Our main topic for the show is the cost of climbing Everest, as we break down the recent update on that subject from Alan Arnette as we inch closer to the 2018 season.

I'm sure some of you are probably scratching your head and thinking, "didn't you already have a first episode?" Why, yes we did, but that show was called episode 0 and for good reason. Dave and I used it as a test bed to work out some of the technical kinks and figure out how all of this podcasting technology works. We have since made progress on our recording and editing, and this show is actually much better than the first in that regard.

As part of the process, we've also moved the show to a new hosting site, which I hope will now be its permanent home. That means we had to update our feeds in iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher, which can sometimes take a bit of time. Hopefully those will have all been updated today, and you'll find the podcast waiting for you in your favorite app. If you want to speed things a long a bit, you might try unsubscribing and resubscribing, although it should update automatically at some point.

For those who want to listen to the show but don't have a smartphone or a podcast app, you can listen to it online here. As always, we appreciate any feedback you might have, so join us on Facebook or Twitter, or send us an email at theadventurepod@gmail.com.

And as always, thanks for listening and giving this a shot. We think you'll enjoy it.

Download The Adventure Podcast on Your Favorite Platform

As I write this, I am busily working away at editing the second episode of The Adventure Podcast. We hope to have the second episode out very soon. But before we release it, my cohost David Adlard and I wanted to let everyone know that the show is available on your favorite platform for listening to podcasts now. So, no matter if you enjoy listening on an iOS device, Android phone or tablet, or just on your computer, you should be able to subscribe to our feed and automatically get new episodes.

For those who want to listen to our new little venture, here's where you can get the episodes:

  • Subscribe in iTunes/iOS Podcasts by clicking here
  • On Android use Google Play Music to get the show here
  • If you listen on Stitcher, you'll find The Adventure Podcast here.
  • We also have an RSS feed set up for the show here.
Also, if you've had a chance to listen to the show, we'd love your feedback. We can be reached on Twitter at @adventure_pod or by email at theadventurepod@gmail.com. You can also leave comments, suggestions, and questions on our Facebook page as well.

Thanks to everyone who sent us feedback on Episode 0. We learned a lot while making it and the first  real episode will be better for it. We have some big plans for the show moving forward, and Dave and I hope you'll come along for the ride.

Introducing The Adventure Podcast

It's been a long time coming, and I've hinted at it on social media a couple of times, but I'm happy to introduce The Adventure Podcast at long last. The first episode is now available to download through iTunes or can be accessed directly here

The show looks to be a bit of an extension of this blog, sharing weekly news from the adventure world, discussing major topics of interest, talking about gear, and having interviews with interesting guests. It is co-hosted with my friend David Adlard, who has a rich background in the world of outdoor adventure as well having competed in several Ironman events and numerous adventure races, as well as working as a mountain guide and race director himself. Dave and I have known each other for a number of years and share a passion for the outdoors, exploration, and travel. We hope to bring that to you on a weekly basis in an audio format.

We've labeled this first show as Episode 0 because it serves as a pilot of sorts. It is our first attempt at creating this type of content, and we're still learning the ropes some. As a result, the show is still a little rough around the edges, but you'll get an understanding of where we are coming from and where we hope to go in the weeks ahead. We've already learned a lot from making this one, so we hope to make some big leaps forward in terms of production quality with our next show.

We have also set up a few social media outlets for those who would like to share feedback and learn more about the podcast. Our Facebook page can be found here and we're active on Twitter at @adventure_pod. We can also be reached by email at theadventurepod@gmail.com. We would love to hear from listeners as we continue to develop the show, and one of the regular segments we'd like to include is answer questions sent our way. So, if there is something you'd like to ask, feel free to drop us a note.

Other than that, Dave and I hope you enjoy the program. We're looking forward to having fun with the podcast format and hopefully offering some interesting and compelling content.

Explore The Arctic (and Antarctic!) with Icescapes!

Here's an amazing new video podcast that was just brought to my attention last night, but has already earned it's way onto my "must watch" list. It's called Icescapes, and it intends to bring the far flung Arctic and Antarctic environments home to us on our computers and iPods.

The show just launched back on January 5th, and there have already been a number of episodes since then. The first thing you'll notice is the high quality nature of the video, and the great production values that goes into each of them. The subject matter varies greatly already, with episodes that involve kiting to a remote early warning station, dogsledding through arctic conditions, and skiing in Greenland. (Check out that episode below).

You can get the episodes in a variety of formats, including watching them on the Icescapes website, downloading them directly to your computer, or subscribing to the podcast in iTunes. I've only watched them on my computer so far, but the website promises amazing quality on your iPhone/iPod or HDTV, and judging from what I've seen so far, I tend to believe them. Check out the sample episode and add this to your favorites. Thanks to Jon from The Rest of Everest for sending this my way.

The Wildebeat Covers Summer OR 2007

One of the better outdoor oriented podcasts that I've come across is The Wildebeat which covers a wide range of topics of interest such as places to visit, building essential skills, and gear.

This week's episode focuses on last week's Summer Outdoor Retailer Show and some of the exciting new gear that was on display there. Wildebeat host Steve Sergeant gets the input of several reviewers from BackpackGearTest.org on what stood out to them, with a variety of interesting responses.

I've posted on episodes of the Wildbeat before, but recently I've been so busy with side projects and the day job, that I haven't had time to listen to my normal array of podcasts. Hopefully I can get back to some of my favorites so I can make recommendations on which ones are worthy of your time. The WIldebeat is most definitely worthy, and you can listen to the episodes directly from the website or by subscribing to them in iTunes.
