This past weekend the 2018 edition of the iconic Dakar Rally got underway in Peru, sending drivers off on one of the most challenging and difficult motorized races in the entire world. The event is always a test of stamina, skill, determination, pushing competitors to their absolute limits. The video below takes a look at what to expect from the race, which is 12 days in length and starts in Lima, Peru, and finishes in Cordoba, Argentina. As always, it looks to be quite the adventure.

Video: Explorer Louis-Philippe Loncke Discusses Lake Titicaca Exepdtion At TEDxFlanders
Last year, explorer Louis-Philippe Loncke, along with Gadiel Sanchez Rivera aka "Cho", spent 38 days circumnavigating Lake Titicaca by kayak. That body of water, which falls on the border of Peru and Bolivia, is considered the highest navigable lake in the world, and yet no one had ever completely paddled its shores before. Recently, Lou-Phi appeared at TEDxFlanders to share his story about that expedition. The video below is his presentation. It offers all kinds of insights into what they found on their journey, and the logistics of kayaking in the Andes.
Video: The North Face Presents - Lost Gringos
This video is definitely for those who enjoy a good story with their beautiful clips of mountains. It follows ski mountaineer Sam Smoothy – and friends – as he travels to the Andes mountains in Bolivia to follow in his father's footsteps. Year's earlier, Sam's dad went to the mountains to make some first ski descents, and now his son is doing the same. The story is both inspiring and touching, with some great scenery as well. Get comfortable for this one, you'll want to watch it all the way through.

Video: Crazy Urban Downhill Mountain Bike Race Caught On Helmet Cam
The Red Bull Descenso del Condor is a crazy downhill urban mountain bike race that is held in La Paz, Bolivia each year. Riders scream through the streets, fly off jumps, roll down stone steps and otherwise go places that they probably shouldn't. It is a wild ride to say the least, and is best experienced in a video like the one below, which was captured on helmet cam. The video gives us a good idea of what the riders have to contend with as they fly through the course.
Personally, I think I'll stick to the trails, but it definitely is fun to watch. There was more than one occasion where I was expecting the rider to take the road or some other obvious path, only for him to go in an entirely different direction. This one may not be for the faint of heart.

CIA turns up pressure in Bolivia?

There appears to be a violent destabilisation campaign by right-wing forces in Bolivia. ( US hands off Bolivia! Respect Bolivian sovereignty - Online Petition )
"US-Venezuelan lawyer Eva Golinger, as reported at http://boliviarising.blogspot.com on September 15, has revealed funding to the tune of US$13.3 million by US government-funded organisations to a number of the groups responsible for the destabilisation.
"These are the same US-funded organisations that have helped fund and organise right-wing groups inside Venezuela responsible for attempts to overthrow Venezuela's elected government. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez argued on his TV show Alo Presidente on September 10 that the same method of US intervention that led to the US-backed military coup that briefly overthrew the Venezuelan government in 2002 is now being used in Bolivia." - (US hands off Bolivia! According to Green Left: in Bolivia, the historic vote confirms a will for change
Bolivia’s President Morales won 67.43% vote in the August 10 recall referendum.
"Surpassing the 53.7% he received in the 2005 national elections (until August 10 the highest vote recorded by a presidential candidate in Bolivia’s history) the result confirmed the broad support for Morales’s Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) government’s project for wide-ranging social change...
"The vote has confirmed that Morales has maintained large support among the middle classes, as well as growing class struggle in the east — where Morales’ vote dramatically increased, rejecting the concept of a government whose authority would be limited to the west...
"As the Morales government has advanced in its project to recuperate state control over natural resources, including the May 1, 2006 nationalisation of Bolivia’s gas reserves, the elites located in the east have worked to construct a regional pro-autonomy movement."

Is the CIA trying to topple the president of Bolivia?

Bolivia's President Morales is the sort of person the CIA does not like.
President Morales wants to give more political power to the poor indigenous majority.
He wants a land reform programme.
Evo Morales has a strong democratic mandate, having won almost 54% of the vote in the last election.
In May 2007, Morales nationalised the oil and gas industries saying that a greater share of the wealth they produce should go to ordinary Bolivians, rather than foreign investors.
Most of Bolivia's natural resources are found in the east of the country
In December 2007, the constituent assembly approved a new draft constitution that will give greater power to the country's poor and indigenous people.
Morales has withdrawn Bolivians from the U.S.-run School of the Americas, a military training base in Georgia that has trained many dictators and torturers.

So, what about the CIA?
The CIA has a long history of trying to topple people like Morales. The CIA represents the rich elite.
One can expect the CIA to try to destabilise Bolivia and topple Morales.
There have already been acts of violence and sabotage.
Four of the nine departmental governments have threatened to break away from Bolivia.
The U.S. Agency for International Development is supplying money to groups that oppose Morales. ( Why Bolivia matters)
The CIA has a long history of activity in Bolivia. Che Guevara was assassinated in Bolivia by people who were reportedly working for the CIA.
