Casio G Shock G9000-8 Stormtrooper Mudman

The Mudman has seen many iterations of both module and case. The G9000 is my favorite and this particular model is my absolute favorite. Nicknamed the Stormtrooper like everything else that happens to be white with black accents, the name is somewhat misleading as the resin is more of a khaki color. With an orange tinted display and a white framed dual display makes this model more unique amongst G Shocks.

The G7800 line was called the Super Square because the shape is basically a square 5600 on steroids. There were several options available either with a positive or negative display with a matching color bezel. There was also a white model available. Being a reverse display with a black bezel, this one was called the Stealth Super Square. This model is notable because it simply has the best module I have ever seen in a G Shock. Really a shame Casio does not use it in any other models.

Here's another G Shock from the past. I liked this one a lot as the red letters and bezel really pops and the solar panel has a cool looking pattern to it that looks like Spiderman's costume. Casio made a terrible mistake with this one by making the window in the middle of the dial display a G when the radio sync was successful and it be completely blank and empty when unsuccessful. Unfortunately the radio reception on this one was not very good so the window was empty most of the time giving the owner a feeling of inadequacy. Still though it has a great case and a very comfortable strap. Covered buttons can be a challenge to push. Great module with some cool chronograph features. I believe this particular model has been discontinued although it may life on in another form in a JDM model.

Here's a nice model I got for my father a couple of years ago. I picked it purposely because of the large digits, but it also has a nice chunky case. Seems larger than the current 5600 case. Radio controlled module actually works fairly well although I think it only receives the US signal. Nice engraved caseback too.

I think this one is still available. I've thought about getting my own, but I know my father will bore of his eventually.

Casio released the Red Rising collection in the fall of 2012 to celebrate the 30 years of existence of the G Shock watch. The collection consists of a 5600, 6900, 2 versions of Frogman and the new model Mudman all packaged in a bold red glossy resin with gold accents. I’m a sucker for the squares, so I made the 5600 model mine.

This time every year I get G-Shock fever. I picked up these two pieces recently. One is a new model while the other is an old one. On the left in Ferrari red is the 30th Anniversary model GWM5630A-4 and on the right is an old school Stormtrooper Mudman G-9000-8V. Both are really cool. I'll have some more pictures and information on each sometime soon. Like when the sun comes out again. Now where are my cargo shorts?

Video Demonstration of Bluetooth Casio G-Shock GB-6900

A video demonstration from the recent CES show of the soon to be released bluetooth enabled Casio G-Shock GB-6900 has been posted and is making the rounds. This model was previously posted about here and was supposed to be released late in 2011, but was delayed because of the floods in Thailand.

Utilizing a Low Energy Bluetooth connection to a cell phone or computer, this watch can sync the time, as well as notify for incoming emails and text messages. The video demonstrates an interesting interaction between the watch and phone where a touch of the crystal will signal to the phone to ignore a call and stop ringing. The video also demonstrates that Casio sees the potential in this technology to connect the watch to other devices like a television, audio player and even a medical instrument.

You know there are plenty of people who will look down their noses at any watch presented at an electronics exhibit, but I think it's great. We are living in the 21st century and it is interesting to witness the continuing evolution of the wristwatch. While at odds for years with the cell phone for the utility of telling time, it is great to see the watch and cell phone working cooperatively to improve the function of both items to be greater than each singularly.

The GB-6900 is scheduled to be released in March 2012.

Casio is celebrating the 45th anniversary of Ultraman with a special limited edition release featuring a customized DW5600 and collector tin.

This watch brings me right back to the 1980’s. Not only is it a reissue of the original G Shock DW-5000, it is also a signature model by filmmaker Spike Lee who made his big spash in the late 80’s with “School Daze” and “Do the Right Thing”. And that’s the double truth, Ruth.

Saw on mygshock that Casio is offering a limited edition line of G Shock watches with all proceeds to go toward the continued efforts for earthquake relief for Japan.

The models are designed by Eric Haze who all G Shock fans should be familiar with and feature the simple "Hope Japan" logo on the white band of each model. Model numbers are DW-6900FS-8HJ, G-7900A-7HJ and GA-110C-7AHJ and are available through gshock.com at prices of $89, $99, and $120 respectively.

Video Review of Casio G-Shock GW-3000B-1A Aviator Watch

I saw a great video review made by DougFNJ and it features the GW-3000 Aviator Watch. This model looks really good in his video and a lot better than the stock photos. Feature wise, Casio seems to have really improved the "user experience" of the multi-function analog. Very nice model.

Press Release for JDM Casio G-Shock Mudman GW-9300

Just happened to see Casio's press release for the Japan market G-Shock Mudman GW-9300. Pretty much the same as what was announced at Basel for the international model G-9300, however there are a few important differences.

As you can tell from the model number the GW-9300 will be radio controlled with Multi Band 6. The other difference is the GW-9300 is described to have a carbon fiber reinforced resin strap. Since no mention of this was made for the G-9300 I'm assuming the carbon fiber strap has been omitted. Hard to see any differences between the stock photos. Since the only other carbon fiber G-Shock (GW-S5600) was also limited to a Japan release maybe there are concerns in meeting the demand of the international market.

EDIT: I just noticed it actually says "Carbon Fiber" on the strap in the picture below while the G-9300 says "Tough Solar" in the same location so I guess that indicates that the CF will stay in Japan. That's OK with me. I didn't feel like paying for it anyway.

The GW-9300 will have a MSRP of 35,000 Yen and will be released June 30.

New Casio Mudman G-9300 to be Released

Holy Smokes there a whole bunch of new G Shock models have been announced. I can't even try to keep up with them all so I'll just refer you to mygshock who has it all covered.

I will point out that the new Mudman model G-9300 is my favorite. I think this looks great and I think the Mudman can now be the official Field Watch for G Shock with a digital compass, thermometer, moon phase display and of course the mud resistant case. Is it me or do the buttons on the right side look similar to those on the original Mudman DW-8400?

Casio to Release G-Shock Bluetooth Watch in 2011

Casio Japan has announced their Bluetooth enabled G-Shock will be released in 2011 and have provided a picture of the model. View the original press release here.

The model looks to be cased in the classic and popular 6900/6600 case and looks a lot nicer than the prototype that was announced at the CES show earlier in 2011.

The watch features the use of Bluetooth Low Energy to provide 2 years battery life from a standard CR2032 cell with 12 hours of Bluetooth use per day. The watch will receive the time calibration as well as phone and message updates but can also communicate with the phone to silence any unwanted rings. Functions typical of the G Shock such as world timer, 24 hour stopwatch and 24 hour count down timer are also incorporated.

It should be noted that Bluetooth Low Energy devices are not backward compatible with existing Bluetooth technologies. Since Bluetooth Low Energy is still in its infantcy, this watch is a little ahead of itself with regard to existing smart phones on the market. However, I for one find any technological innovations exciting and this will finally deliver the highest time accuracy to even those outside of the transmission range of the atomic towers. This will also provide a means to deliver other content to your watch for ease of access such as stock ticker, weather, sport score updates or perhaps even biometrics from an implanted pacemaker or insulin pump diagnostics or any other innovations yet discovered.

I admit it. I’m jealous of the kids who match their G Shocks with their caps, jerseys and sneakers. I just can’t pull it off. Sure, anyone can buy and wear, but its the confidence I lack. An exchange that disappears with the extra decade of age. Maybe I could pull it off if I had a few drinks in me, but that would make the rest of the day a challenge. Maybe with an extra two decades I will have the confidence to simply not care what people think.

Then one day I saw the 5600 Crazy Colors models and made a wonderful observation. Yes, I can now finally accessorise with my G Shock. You see, the blue one is the same color as the Fisher Space Pen X-750 I just bought. So now I think I’m cool, in a nerd kinda way.
