Andy Whyment to join Dancing on Ice?

The Sunday People reports today - and has a picture of him practising - that Andy Whyment, who plays Coronation Street's Kirk Sutherland, is joining the new series of Dancing on Ice. 

Does anyone know if this is true?  And if it is, why are Corrie freeing him up to do this instead of giving Kirk a storyline on the Street?
