Here’s a recap of what else happened with the state’s pro and college track and field athletes in the first full weekend of competition:

In Edinburgh, Scotland, Garrett Heath of the Seattle based Brooks Beasts (left/photo by John Nepolitan, dyestat.com) raced to a sixth place finish at the Great Edinburgh X Country Challenge race, finishing the 8k course at Holyrood Park Saturday in 25:03.

EDINBURGH, Great Britain—Three time winner Garrett Heath (left/photo by Paul Merca) of Seattle’s Brooks Beasts is among the headliner performers for Team USATF for Saturday’s Great Edinburgh X-Country Challenge race at famed Holyrood Park.

He’ll be joined by 2016 Olympian and defending champ Leonard Korir, and Chris Derrick of the Portland based Bowerman TC on the men’s senior 8k squad.

PORTLAND—Saturday’s Central Washington Invitational has officially been moved to the Saint Martin’s University campus in Lacey, according to a release sent out Thursday afternoon by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

In Birmingham, England, former Puyallup resident Hassan Mead finished seventh in the 3000 meters at the Müller Birmingham Grand Prix Sunday, the twelfth stop on the IAAF Diamond League tour.

Mead ran 7:51.09, as Mo Farah of the Nike Oregon Project ran to the victory in 7:38.64, in the British legend’s final track race on home soil.

SHORELINE—In what was supposed to be an attempt by UCLA alum Daniel Herrera of Mexico to reach the 3:36.00 qualifying time needed to compete in the world championships in two weeks fell flat, as Brannon Kidder (left/photo by Paul Merca) of the Brooks Beasts won the high performance 1500 meter run Wednesday night at the Club Northwest all-comers meet at Shoreline Stadium.

Wednesday night’s Club Northwest all-comers meet at Shoreline Stadium just north of Seattle will have a bit of a high performance feel, as Club Northwest and the Brooks Beasts will stage two elite races.

At 8:25 pm, the men’s 1500 meters will get underway, with a field that includes Brooks Beasts team members Izaic Yorks, Garrett Heath, and Brannon Kidder; 4-time USA world championships

Friday and Saturday marks the busiest weekend in top level indoor track and field in America, with the USA indoor championships happening just down Interstate 5 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, and the collegians heading to Birmingham, Alabama (Division I) and Pittsburg, Kansas (Division II) for the NCAA indoor championship meet.

INDIANAPOLIS—Five athletes with ties to the state of Washington were recently named by the USA Track & Field Foundation as recipients of the foundation’s Elite Athlete Development grants.
