Exposure to high surfactant concentration results in gill epithelial disruption causing subsequent asphyxiation or osmoregulatory failure (Mallatt 1985), while exposure to sublethal concentrations of surfactants causes gill epithelial hyperplasia, oxidative stress and mucus layer damage of fishes, which predispose them to microbial attack (Susmi et al. 2010 ).
