Dear friends,
William is a male Chacma baboon. He used to live at the East London Zoo in South Africa. But last year, inspectors from the country's oldest animal welfare organization, the NSPCA, discovered something disturbing. William had developed a form of paralysis in his hind legs and was barely moving. Within a few days, wounds covered his body, becoming infected and filled with maggots. Yet zoo staff still left him to suffer.
The gross negligence and cruelty of this zoo has not escaped visitors. Daphne T started a Care2 petition demanding that officials close down this abusive zoo and help these innocent animals before it is too late. Will you sign her petition?
William was too lethargic in his enclosure to move much, and when he did, he had to drag his lower body along. NSPCA inspectors were horrified to discover that two days in a row, he had hardly stirred at all. The concrete flooring around him was covered in blood, and pieces of his flesh were even visible.
The NSPCA had no choice but to humanely euthanize poor William on site to spare him from further suffering. But other animals remain in the zoo's care, and it is up to us to save them before they wind up just like William.
Thank you,
 Miranda B.
