| Dear friends, The albatross is sometimes called the "King of the Ocean," but its reign could soon end in disaster. That’s because its fate is tied to a mysterious deepwater fish that experts believe is being hunteded into extinction. Every year the albatross and longline trawl fishermen travel to the South Atlantic to hunt. The albatross in search of fish and other prey floating close to the surface while the fishermen set their sights on the Patagonian Toothfish more commonly known as Chilean sea bass. These fish live thousands of feet below the sea. So deep that fisherman must trawl long lines baited with hooks and measuring up to 130kms long behind their boats to catch them. Unfortunately, seabirds mistake the baited hooks for food and swoop down to catch them, getting caught in the process. 300,000 birds are killed this way each year, all in pursuit of an endangered fish one third of them are albatross. As if that weren't enough, there is another culprit in the tragic story of the albatross and the toothfish Amazon.com. The world's largest online marketplace allows its vendors to sell the Chilean seabass on its website. This creates a market, putting the toothfish further in jeopardy and encourages a fishing practice that kills 100,000 albatross a year. Thank you for making a difference, | | Andrew M.
