EU countries: stop taxing women's periods! | | | Sign Now |

| Dear friends, If there's one thing that women all over the European Union can agree on, it's that their governments need to ditch the "tampon tax." A Value-Added Tax (VAT) is applied to many common consumer goods that are considered nonessential "luxury" items – and unfortunately tampons and other feminine hygiene products are commonly included in this category. Lots of other products are already exempted from VAT in EU countries – but only if they're recognized as "necessary" goods like groceries, razors, incontinence pads or other medical products. If politicians had consulted more women when making these laws, they would have realized that tampons are absolutely necessary. This is essentially a tax on being a woman. Sanitary products are a basic need – non-optional items that must be purchased every month. But the way tampons are taxed, you'd think having a period must be a choice.
