Moses Akatugba needs your help before tomorrow.
Dear Friends, Moses Akatugba was just 16 years old when he was arrested under suspicion of armed robbery in Nigeria. Soldiers shot him in the hand and beat him on the head before taking him to the police station. And it didn't stop there. Moses spent more than three months in police detention, where he says officers repeatedly beat him with machetes and batons. He told Amnesty that officials tied and hung him up for several hours and then used pliers to pull out his toenails and fingernails. Finally, Moses was forced to sign two pre-written confessions. Take action for Moses. Tell Emmanuel Uduaghan, the governor of Delta State, to commute his sentence before he leaves office TOMORROW. Last year, Moses - who was just a boy when he was arrested - was sentenced to death, after eight years awaiting trial in prison. The sentence was based only on his forced confession and the testimony of the robbery victim, which was full of contradictions. Seven months ago, after activists like you sent 500,000 messages in support of Moses, Governor Uduaghan pledged to look into his case. But Uduaghan's term in office ends on May 29 - TOMORROW. It's imperative that he commute Moses' sentence before he leaves office. Help save Moses' life: Tell Governor Uduaghan to act immediately. Under international law, Moses never should have been sentenced to death, as he was a child at the time of the crime. But the criminal justice system in Nigeria is weak, blighted by corruption and human rights violations. The use of torture is widespread and widely reported, but most of the cases are not investigated. Together, we can help force an end to this. Please, stand with us in taking action for Moses immediately. In solidarity, Adotei Akwei Managing Director of Government Relations Amnesty International USA P.S. The governor's term in office ends tomorrow. We need your help. Please take action.
