A sham court in Egypt has just sentenced 182 people to death. Hundreds more have been sentenced to death in Egypt earlier this year and this could become the biggest mass execution this century -- but one man’s opinion could stop the killings.

Egypt’s most important religious figure, Grand Mufti Allam, has 10 days to reject the decision. His opinion holds significant weight, but he has so far refused to take a strong stance against the mass death sentences. In two days the Mufti will be visiting the UK, and if we flood him with a massive global call for compassion, he could help stop the meaningless death of hundreds.

Egypt’s military regime is using political show trials to wipe out the opposition and time is running out fast - join this urgent call to save the lives of 182 people! Sign and share with everyone you know -- let’s urgently reach 1 million signatures and Avaaz will deliver the petition directly to Grand Mufti Allam when he reaches the UK:

Egypt’s politically motivated trials are rampant, with death sentences and lengthy jail sentences being thrown out frivolously to kill off the opposition. From Muslim Brotherhood supporter to secular human rights defenders, the military regime is using the justice system to silence all dissent. Grand Mufti Allam is the first Mufti to be selected by his peers in Egypt, many of whom have condemned mass executions.

Earlier this year, when 528 people were sentenced to death, over 1.5 Million Avaaz members came together to call on the Grand Mufti to save their lives. An Avaaz campaigner had a meeting scheduled with the Mufti, but got detained at the airport and questioned for hours -- but our campaign hit major media and helped increase the pressure. So far nobody has been executed -- if we now use the Mufti’s appearance in Britain and flood him with a collective call for mercy, he might reconsider.

Many believe the Grand Mufti could be a force for compassion in Egypt -- Click below to sign the urgent petition to stop the mass executions now, then forward this email to friends and family:
