NO  EVICTIONS WITHOUT SOLUTIONS

The 750+ men, women and children who have occupied the place of food distibution after the destruction of their camps are about to be thrown in the street. The tribunal have decided the eviction, on request of Natacha Bouchart and her administration. There are over 1000  migrant people in Calais, the highest number since 2009. Clearly, repression and destruction of camps do not work. People keep coming, for very pressing reasons– the  majority of migrants in Calais are war refugees who have lost family members and had to flee for their own lives. They are from Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, many Sudanese (Darfur, South Sudan) Eritreans, Ethiopians arrive from Libya to Italy, a terrible journey in which many people die. To make them sleep in the streets is against humanity, and a clear violation of their human rights. It also puts the rest of the population at risk, as the terrible living conditions bread illnesses that can spread. Many women (over
100)
are in Calais, several are pregnant (often because they get raped during the journey). There are many children of all ages, some with their mother and /or father, some alone. Many women and children sleep in the place of food distribution because the safe squat in bv Victor Hugo is full over the limit. The squat however is about to be closed, and no solution has been offered:  the local authorities have announced they will  requisition the day centre of the Secours Catholique, and put the women and their children there.! It is not a place adapted for living. The asylum seekers who are going there will no longer have a day centre.

We call for a full end to this injustice.
People must be given a roof, enough food, toilets, showers and medical care, regardless whether they have papers or not. They are human beings not animals.
People must be given legal routes to travel, without having to die unnecessarily (over 20.000 people died at the borders of Europe).
People must have access to a legal process of regularization and the possibility to integrate and rebuild their lives.  Most are educated, intelligent people who could make a great contribution to society.
People must be allowed to remain in a country of their choice, not sent back to the first country they arrived (Dublin regulations): Italy and Greece cannot take all the refugees who arrive in Europe.
Police violence must stop. We are sick and tired to see people beaten, gassed, and having their shelters, blankets and personal belongings destroyed.
