Requirements:
3 year Degree / National Diploma in Film or Information Management or equivalent qualification with a working knowledge of the preservation of film and video and related audio-visual formats. Relevant experience preferable in cinematographic film work, general historical events pertaining to South Africa and a working knowledge on South African film history.
Duties:
Evaluation of all film and video formats for production of technical records. Do appraisal and accessioning of all film and video formats. Care, repair and restoration of videos. Quality control of duplications and returned material. Arrange for delivery and return of all film and video material to and from the laboratories. Preparation of film and video material for viewing at client services section. Operation of different types of equipment to access material. Maintenance of Vaults and Storerooms. Monitor temperature and humidity in vaults and keep daily registers thereof. Select material from donations for preservation. Sorting, marking off, written acknowledgement, attending and storing of films and videos received. Providing source codes to new material groups. Assist with compiling a list of the contents of each film and/or video vault. Checking accuracy of lists. The sorting, packaging and marking and storing of film and video donations. The describing and indexing of information regarding the donation. Keeping and updating of a register of donated and received material. Stocktaking , numbering, stamping, indexing and data-coding of new and backlogged items. Writing of thank you letters. Preservation measures and interventions for film and video collections. Supply information on the collections for the website and client services and outreach units. Compile reports weekly, monthly and annually on all aspects of the collection and preservation thereof. Identify hiatuses in the collection. Source and operate relevant equipment for the long term preservation of the material. Select material for digitization programmes.
