Dr Sven Haakanson was among the recipients of a prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, also known as a genius grant. Haakanson is only the second MacArthur Fellow from Alaska. (The first was Katherine Gottlieb, former CEO of Southcentral Foundation.) He was recognized by the foundation as the "driving force behind the revitalization of indigenous language." Indeed, as director of the Alutiiq Museum, Haakanson has been a ceaseless promoter of Kodiak Alutiiq language and culture, fostering innovative efforts to promote and revitalize Alutiiq language. Congratulations to Dr. Haakanson. May his work inspire continued efforts to promote Alaska Native languages.
