Bubbly Naked Shower Gel

Celebrate or not celebrate? That is a question that divides the Lush community time and time again. But if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that the introduction of Bubbly Shower Gel last year, and the likes of Bucks Fizz this season, is a blessing worth celebrating, no matter what our noses are telling us.

Sharing its scent with the liquid gel, Bucks Fizz Body Conditioner and Bucks Fizz Naked Conditioner, Bubbly Naked Shower Gel is a product that I simply cannot imagine removing from my bathroom any time soon. While my trusted and very much loved liquid gel is also up there as being a staple, this season’s new addition has won over my heart, despite the differences it shares with its older sibling.

Firstly, it must be noted that the solid edition is perhaps a little less attractive to look at. While similar, there is something rather beautiful about the glistening orange colour you find in the bottle, and the naked edition simply lacks that magic a little. However, I’m not about to write off a product because of the way it looks.

Much like Plum Rain and Snow Fairy, there are some aspects of this naked edition that don’t replicate the beauty of the original gels. Despite this, all three of these offer characteristics that make them worth investing in alongside the originals, yet set them apart enough to offer you an alternative experience as well.

As with all of the naked gels, you treat them as you would a block of soap. Simply expose them to water and then massage them across your skin in a circular motion. Just like a normal shower gel, they will create a fragrant larger to clean and fragrance your skin with; yet unlike a soap, they will not leave your body feeling at all dry or parched.

Just like all of the products with this scent, Bubbly Naked Shower Gel smells like a strong, fruity concoction of oranges and limes - a combination that smells so fresh and juicy, that you’re senses will tingle with pleasure and your tastebuds will be tantalised enough to make you salivate upon first sniff. 

The first difference I noticed between the naked and normal gels is that the former version was perhaps a little more zesty than the original bottled edition. The orange made a much stronger impression in the naked format and I really loved how extra sweet and citrusy it was. In a way, it reminded me of fruit sorbet ice creams, which just made it seem more refreshing and fruity in the shower. 

Secondly, I loved how much more generous this version was in terms of how much lather it created. While the consistency was far thinner and not as moisturising as the normal gel, the naked version needed very little stimulation to heed an impressive amount of product to clean yourself with. I could easily wash my whole body with the amount of ‘foam’ I was able to create from a few seconds of massaging the bottle between my hands.

What I did find frustrating when using the naked gel was that the bottle tended to ‘bleed’ quite profusely, without much encouragement at all. I only needed to wet the bottle for a split second to create an abundance of watery lather across my hands and body. The fact that this shower gel offers a bright and very messy orange lather doesn’t make the situation any better. If you’re not careful when using this, you may find that you get splatters of Bubbly across every wall and surface within the near vicinity of your shower. 

Moreover, even though I tried my best to keep this product out of the way of the running water, I found that it shrunk far quicker than any of the other naked shower gels that I have tried so far. For this reason, a 250g bottle of the original Bubbly would outlast this solid version easily, and I think that’s the only major aspect of the naked edition that lets itself down. 

While I couldn’t detect much of a scent on my skin a matter of minutes after towelling myself down, I did find that my skin looked and felt really radiant. Especially after using this to wash my face as well, I found that it worked just as well as using a face mask, and my skin felt smooth to the touch afterwards.

Ultimately, this naked gel only lets itself down by being rather messy during and in between uses. I would highly suggest that you store this in a Lush massage tin when not in use, as it will drip a little before drying. Annoyingly, I found that I had to wipe down the window ledge and sides of bath after using this - as no matter how hard I tried not to make a mess, it’s inevitable with a gel that ebbs so much colour and liquid when in or around whatever.

However, I still think the magical citrusy smell of this naked shower gel, and just how softening it is, makes the mess worth it. If you love Bubbly Shower Gel, you will definitely be able to notice a difference here. Yet, there is something wonderful about the the subtle variations that makes this naked edition equally as enticing.

They are a pinnacle part of my Lush collection, and outshine the introduction of any new bath bomb or bubble bar. 

When I realised that there was only going to be one new bottle featured in this year's Christmas selection, I was initially a little underwhelmed - despite the surplus of other new goodies that were coming out for the first time for me to enjoy. However, after sharing the shower with this brand new Christmas exclusive only once, I realised very quickly that this would more than make up for the lack of other gels and jellies on offer.

Bubbly Shower Gel is the epitome of its name - a bright, fruity and extremely uplifting shower gel that will turn any miserable morning into an optimistic one at the very least. While not an aroma that is in any way exclusively linked to Christmas (or indeed the new year), this product is the perfect remedy to cheer you up during the colder months, and will definitely help to maintain and improve the condition of your skin at a time when it's most needed. 

Although there is an ever-expansive debate about whether or not this shares its fragrance with the Celebrate and Snowshowers scent family, what is true is that it has the same bubbly, spritzy qualities that will make a person fall in love with it, just like they would the aforementioned. In fact, I would go as far as to say that this may just thwart any previous attempts from Lush to replicate the Celebrate fragrance.

Modelled on champagne, this shower gel is crammed full of so many fruity layers that I feel as if the celebratory drink pales in comparison. Orange, lime and grape juice make up Bubbly's alluring smell, and although I feel as if all three ingredients are on par with each other for the most part, it is the grape juice that breaks the surface a little more and leads the others.

This shower gel smells exactly like Golden Wonder to me - a bright, light and very smooth fruity smell with a warming undercurrent of orange and a single drop of lime juice for a little zest. It's a comforting blanket of juice and what I would describe as a 'bottle of sunshine'. Simply put, it's utterly beautiful.

Not only is it one of the best-smelling shower gels that Lush have ever done, but the ingredients that have gone into it also help to make this one of the most moisturising. Grape juice is great for replenishing the skin, while lime cleanses the pores of excess dirt and orange oil helps to brighten the skin - adding some much needed radiance to those winter-scorched complexions. 

In the bottle, Bubbly is of a medium-to-thick consistency, similar to that of Plum Rain, which means you need very little to utilise a generous lather with. Massaging it across your skin or between your palms creates thick, fragrant, softening suds that glide over and coat your skin with ease, leaving you smelling like a fruity cocktail and lifting your mood ten-fold.

Although this is a Christmas exclusive, this would be equally beautiful at any time of the year, especially during the hotter months - when the collaboration of smells would be very welcoming after a stifling hot day outside. The smell lingers on the skin for a long time after you've towelled yourself down as well, so you'll be followed by bursts of sweet, juicy grape and orange throughout the day.

Being the only new gel this year, it certainly does an incredible job at out-shining anything that has been released for a good number of years. A worthy investment for sure and one that I will be stocking up on before it disappears from the shelf this year. Well done Lush.

Iced Wine Shower Jelly

If I remember rightly, I won a small tub of this jelly in an eBay auction a couple of years ago. At the time I was obsessed with anything that smelled like candy or had a resemblance to Snow Fairy, so I quickly established that I didn't like this product and sold it on. When a tub of this arrived with my latest Lush Kitchen order, I immediately regretted my initial reaction to the product...


Iced Wine Shower Jelly is a wonderfully unique and beautiful jelly - both in how it's presented inside and outside of the tub, and the fragrance it gives off immediately upon removing the lid. Sporting a light, tangerine colour, this item looks and smells like a tropical cocktail - a product that you'd imagine would be best suited for a summer release, but which works perfectly in the colder months. 

Lush describe it as a 'Christmas cocktail' and I couldn't agree more. With an infusion of fresh grape, iced wine and grapefruit oil, this is a sweet, fruity but surprisingly gentle addition to Lush's shower family. The grape infusion (which is made by boiling the fruit in water), gives this jelly a very natural grape aroma, while the grapefruit oil supports this and strengthens the overall fragrance without giving it a sour or overly citrusy smell. 
The bergamot adds its own blend of sweetness that helps to give Iced Wine a very uplifting fruity aroma, while the buchu oils adds a very subtle minty scent. While the finished product doesn't give off a mint smell, there is something fresh about the jelly that reminds me that the buchu oil is present. Those who dislike mint fragrances shouldn't be put off by this description - I can assure you there is nothing minty about the smell. Together, these ingredients offer a unique and very beautiful aroma - like unsweetened grape juice mixed with watermelon and finished off with a dash of pink grapefruit. 

Recognised as one of the best health foods, grapes are a good source of vitamins and minerals, containing magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, C and several of the vitamin B group. This helps to make the jelly extremely gentle yet nourishing on the body - Iced Wine will leave your skin feeling silky-soft whilst helping to repair and improve the condition of your pores. 

The jelly is gorgeous to use and produces a wonderfully soft, fragrant and rather oily lather to clean yourself with. I found it most easiest to cut the jelly into pieces about the size of one of Lush's solid perfume tins, and then rub this directly onto the areas I wanted to clean. I found it equally effective to massage the chunk between the palms of my hands and then massage the foam across my body - this will create a mound of suds for you to use and perhaps conserve the jelly for longer as it's not in constant contact with the water. 
If you find that you have problems holding onto your jelly and lose a fair amount down the plughole, what I also find works for me is breaking off a grape-sized piece and then rubbing it into a sponge or shower-puff, before using this to lather myself with. This tends to help the jelly foam up, wherein the puff them holds the lather whilst you clean yourself.  

After using this, my skin felt really soft and refreshed, and the scent lingered for a good while on my body. Furthermore, I tried freezing this product before using it in the shower,. This yielded really positive results, especially when the weather is hot and you're in need of something to help you to cool down.
If you love the scent of this, you can also break off a piece about the size of a grape and hold it under the flow of water, whereupon it will create a mound of fluffy bubbles and a rather wonderful smelling bath for you to enjoy. 

However you choose to use this shower jelly, Iced Wine is a wonderful addition to anyone's shower and will leave you feeling clean and invigorated. This is the perfect shower companion for anyone who enjoys sweet fragrances but doesn't appreciate anything too synthetic smelling, or anything too citrusy. This would be beautiful as both a bath bomb and a body lotion, and I only hope that Lush think about creating these additions in the near future.

Ooh La La Soap

Having gotten used to Lush's impressively concise recipes, I'm always slightly suspicious of a product that has a rather long ingredients list. Having researched some of the disturbing things that companies shovel into their cosmetics, I am not at all surprised that more and more people suffer from skin complaints and issues relating to the make-up they wear and the products they use on their bodies. So when I saw what goes into making this soap, I worried that all of these elements would somehow damage or irritate my skin.

First released some eight years ago, Ooh La La Soap is easily the most beautiful soap I have ever seen. Sporting a stunning shade of purple, this soap already demands an audience, and that's even before you get onto it's decoration. Most impressive is the fresh lavender flowers and rose petals that adorn the top of each piece; a combination that compliments the colour of the soap perfectly.

As if it's beauty wasn't enough, this product also offers a stunning fragrance - a fresh lavender, thyme and rosemary partnership that stands apart from all of Lush's other herb-inspired products. I love how rich the scent of this soap is, and this only intensifies further when used in the shower.

Inspired by the herb fields of Provence (fields of lavender that stretch for miles across the land), this soap is a perfect accompaniment during the spring and summer months. When I used this in the shower, the smell transported me outside, where I envisaged the many wonderful smells that would entice anyones senses. 

Ooh La La Soap lathers up really easily and produces a slightly purple foam, which is thanks to the deep purple grape juice that is used to make this wonderful soap. Don't worry though - this creamy lather doesn't stain your skin or the bath - instead softening and nourishing your skin with it's delicate touch. 

After using this soap, my skin felt gorgeously smooth and moisturised. Although it didn't leave a strong scent on my body, it's presence remained in the bathroom for a long time afterwards, and I found myself sniffing the bar whenever I walked past. 

Despite it's stunning design, I was slightly dubious of the flower arrangement on the surface of this soap. Especially when it comes to bath bombs, I'm always worried that the little pieces will annoy me to no end and my experience of the product will be tarnished because of this. However, you'll be pleased to know that these flowers take a lot to fall off, and when they do, they simply wash away down the plughole. You won't get annoying pieces smeared across your skin, and the flower heads are small enough that they won't clog up your drain. 

This is the perfect Lush product - it's stunningly beautiful, works amazingly well on the skin and leaves your body and your senses feeling spoilt and well-nourished. Lush need to make this a permanent member of their family, or if they cannot commit to this, at least allow me to buy my weight in this soap so I have enough to last a lifetime.

Spank Me With Saplings Shower Jelly

Although this is my first shower jelly review, it's definitely not the first Lush jelly I've tried. First invented for Lush's 10th anniversary, these multi-purpose products can be used on any part of your body and through a number of different ways. In their normal form, they can be massaged between your palms to create a foam that can then be used very much like a shower gel. They can also be held under the tap to stimulate a sea of bubbles - doubling up as a bubble bar and offering lots of essential oils to soften your skin with.

When I first discovered Spank Me With Saplings Shower Jelly, I was a little taken back. As someone who was still getting used to the weird and wonderful scents that Lush had to offer, this was one that didn't immediately sit well with me. It was loud, it was different and it definitely contradicted everything about a fragrance that I was used to.

I was somewhat intrigued by Lush's apt choice of name for this jelly and decided to research how they chose such a title. I found that the name was inspired by a Nordic tradition, wherein locals, attempting to warm-up after venturing outside, would run around slapping themselves with birch twigs to try and warm up their bodies. Odd, but intriguing.

As with all of Lush's shower jellies, this one features carrageenan seaweed gel as one of its main ingredients, which is packed full of minerals and vitamins to soften both your skin and hair. The inclusion of grape juice not only has a lasting effect on the scent, but helps to brighten the skin and clean out any dirt that is trapped in the pores.

Fresh cucumber juice works in conjunction with the fruit juices to smooth out the skin and leave it feeling refreshed and invigorated; the olive, cinnamon, black pepper and neroli not only impact the overall smell of this shower jelly, but also make this product so incredibly moisturising - one that is instantly noticeable when you begin using it. 

The scent is a bright, sharp citrus smell with herbal and earthy undertones. You can smell the subtle sharpness of the black pepper intertwined with the oak moss and grape juice. Although there doesn't seem to be any lemon added in here, it definitely smells more lemony than grapey. The refreshing cucumber seals the deal and creates quite an unusual and beguiling fragrance - one that you'll either love, or turn your nose up as I did that first time. 

At first I was unsure whether I liked the scent but after a while I came to love it's uniqueness, and it was definitely very refreshing first thing in the morning. Furthermore, while using this in the shower, I liked imagining those buff nordic fellas running around with sticks (Oooer!).

However, although I agree that shower jellies are a wonderful product by themselves, I cannot say that am I particularly enamoured with them like I am the shower gels. As per usual, I found using the jelly rather fiddly - trying to break off a small piece without showering the whole pot with water, or using the whole thing and having to grapple with the wad whilst I cleaned myself down.
Overall, this is a very different-smelling product from any other shower item that Lush have brought out before, and I do really appreciate how unique it is in this manner. However, I will always opt to have a shower gel version of anything in this format, and this is the only negative point I have to make about this beauty.
