Plantational Cake Solid Shampoo Bar

My vast experience with Lush has told me never to judge a product based on its colour or description. Whereas many people might run the other way upon seeing a brown lump that resembles a mud pie, I relish in experimenting with the company's weirdest and most wonderful of creations. Some of my most favourite products have come about through experiences that I've had in which I was expecting things to go horribly wrong at first.

Plantational Cake is equally brand new and retro at the same time. Based on Lush's old-school liquid shampoo of the same name, this limited edition solid looks no different than one of my firm favourite products from the Kitchen - Reincarnate Solid Shampoo. In fact, this product may appear very different ingredients wise, but the two share many good qualities that puts them both in the firm favourites category.

To look at, this solid shampoo bar looks like a cross between a badly-baked brownie and a lump of solid mud. You might be surprised to learn then that this limited edition doesn't smell like either of those two itmes. In fact, the smell of this surprised me quite a lot when it first came into contact with my nose.

Containing Brazilian orange oil combined with a nettle and rosemary leaf infusion, this shampoo bar presents a distinctive sweet smell that reminds me very much of sultanas. The inclusions of both the red henna and the labdanum resinoid add to this subtle fruity element - giving the solid bar a gentle layer of spice and rounds the aroma off with a dry but rather more-ish fragrance. In many ways, Plantational does smell very similar to Reincarnate, so if you've been fortunate enough to have tried the aforementioned shampoo bar, you'll have a good idea about the fragrance of this one.

As with most solid shampoo bars, this one works by wetting it a little under the running water and massaging it straight into your wet hair for a short time. It only takes a few seconds for the product to produce a light but thick lather, so you don't need to use it for more than that to cover your entire scalp. I would then recommend using both hands to ensure the shampoo is equally distributed across your locks. 

Depending on how long you have in the shower, I would suggest that you leave it on for a good few minutes before rinsing it away and applying your conditioner. What I found with this solid shampoo is that the henna taints the lather slightly, so don't worry when you rinse it away and find that the water presents itself as brown.

What I loved about Plantational is that it was effective from the very first wash. Unlike a large percentage of Lush's solid shampoo bars, this one moisturised and detangled my hair while I was in the shower, and I felt at times that I could almost have gotten away with not using conditioner afterwards - it was that effective. 

Upon drying my hair, I noticed that this bar left a slight bit of residue that seemed to coat my hair like a protective blanket. Don't get me wrong, my hair was neither greasy or oily afterwards, but there was something about the feel and touch of my locks that told me that the shampoo bar was still present on my hair. Until you try it out for yourself, it may be difficult to understand what I mean. However, it was almost as if the product had put up a slight barrier around every strand, so it felt as if my hair had more moisture present, without it looking or feeling weighed down. 

My experience with this one was very different to any of Lush's other shampoos, liquid and solid. I really felt as if this one added in that much-needed moisture that my dry hair needed, and within 2-3 uses my hair was looking and feeling much less frizzy and far more manageable. Furthermore, I found that I didn't need to straighten my hair that much, as the shampoo supported and accentuated my waves, without leaving it looking frizzy or untamed.  

Having said that, I will mention that your hair should be completely dry before attempting to straighten it after using Plantational. If your locks are even so much as damp when you use the straightening irons on them, this blanket of moisture that coats your hair will turn greasy, and I found that I had to use dry shampoo afterwards to try and settle the excess moisture. 

Overall, this solid shampoo bar has been an absolute pleasure to use. Not only has it rejuvenated my hair and made it feel far less parched than it did before, but the inclusion of the henna supported my natural hair colour - accentuating the highlights and bringing out the different shades of browns and reds that I don't often get to see.

This is definitely one that I would buy again, and I would go as far as to say that this would be a staple in my house if it was a regular item. Whatever condition your hair might be in, I have heard nothing but glowing reviews about this wonderful Kitchen exclusive, and my experience only serves to support and verify that this shampoo bar is a royal treat.

New Solid Shampoo

Having just finished up my favourite shampoo, Irresistible Bliss, the shampoo to follow had big shoes to fill. After spending the last three months proclaiming how amazing my hair looked and felt, and realising it has never looked better, I was rather anxious to see how New Solid Shampoo would perform.

Looking almost identical to my favourite bar, albeit a little darker, this shampoo claims to be a 'self-preserving, naked bar with many ingredients that will stimulate the blood flow, helping maintain a healthy scalp.' In all honesty, I brought this merely because it was one of the last shampoo bars I had still to try, and now I wish I had bought it earlier.

For starters, this shampoo bar is like every other solid shampoo that I've tried so far; it's very easy to use. You can either massage it through wet hair, or rub it between your hands and create a lather, which can then be applied to your locks. Either way, you can really tell how much shampoo is compacted into a single bar as it lathers up really easily and it'll take weeks before you notice the bar shrinking in size.

Secondly, and one of the main aspects that I enjoy with all of Lush's solid bars, is that it possesses a very gentle smell. While this is definitely stronger than a lot of the other solid shampoo bars on offer, it's still not something that's going to saturate your hair and stay with you for days on end. This one is made up of different cloves, cinnamon and peppermint, so the smell you can pick up smells exactly like a combination of these three main ingredients. 

As I mentioned above, New Solid Shampoo has been specifically designed to target the scalp and features a combination of ingredients to do just that. Cinnamon leaf, bay and clove bud essential oils have been added here, and they are at the forefront of the fragrance. Combined with menthol-rich peppermint and nettle, these ingredients supposedly boost blood flow in the scalp, which in turn stimulates the hair follicles. As a finishing touch, rosemary has been added to calm and protect your scalp and adds a glorious shine to your hair. 

Within two to three uses, I could really the condition of my hair was almost on par with how it was when I was using Irresistible Bliss. My locks felt really moisturised and healthy, whilst retaining a light, well-conditioned consistency overall. When used daily, New Shampoo didn't dry my hair out or cause my dyed hair to fade, which I appreciated. 

However, after a couple of weeks, I did notice that my hair started to get a little greasy and I had to temporarily stop using it. I found that this shampoo doesn't work well when being used every single day so you might have to alternate between this and another shampoo.

As with all other solid products, these bars are really handy for when you're travelling and need to take the bare minimum. They're compact and light and sit perfectly in one of Lush's clearly designed tins, so can be carted anywhere without fear of spillage or leakages. I would recommend though, that if you wish to store your shampoo in one of these tins, make sure the bar is 100% dry before you do; you may have problems trying to get it out the next time as it's a close fit when the bar is full sized.  

Overall, New Solid Shampoo is another solid hair care product that I'll add to my favourite's list. It's one that I'll use again and one that I recommend that you try, even if like me, you don't have any issues with a dry or flaky scalp. My hair was definitely given a 'new' lease of life after using this bar, and I can see why it is one of Lush's best sellers.

Trichomania Solid Shampoo

As I've stated in previous reviews, testing out Lush's haircare range is by far the most time-consuming and easily the most nerve-racking. I have spent many years trying to win back the love from my hair after treating it with an embarrassing amount of distain for the most part of my youth. Using a new product on my hair always makes me nervous, and rightly so; I have experienced some extremely drastic outcomes over the years and I'm intent on never having to go through any of them again. 

Trichomania was supposed to be the last shampoo that I was planning on using on my hair for a long while - that was until Lush decided to bring out five brand new vegan solid bars that I just had to try. Sold in rectangular chunks, this shampoo is the odd one out as it's the only one that isn't presented in the generic spherical bar. Why this bar is sold in this format, I'll never know - I can only assume that it has something to do with the fact that this shampoo tends to shrink at a quicker rate than the other bars. So in order to make it good value for money, Lush need to give you more of it to begin with. 

Whatever the reason, this bar smells incredible. Packed with both creamed coconut and vetivert oil, Trichomania has a wonderfully sweet scent - a combination of Silky Underwear and Curly Wurly Shampoo. It's definitely dominated by the coconut but there's an element of sweet floral, which comes from the vetivert. As far as smells goes, it's definitely one of the more appealing shampoos. 

While they both offer a wonderful aroma, both of the aforementioned ingredients are also key to making this shampoo work well with your hair. Coconut is rich in natural protein so the creamed variety helps to moisten, strengthen and hydrate dry and damaged hair. This shampoo is great for those who straighten their hair a lot or expose their locks to the high temperatures of hair dryers and curling irons - the creamed coconut will leave your hair super soft with a gentle fragrance to see you through the day. 

The shampoo is also really gentle on your scalp and is perfect for those with dry and flaky skin - Trichomania will help to nourish your head and wash away those pesky bits of dandruff.What I loved about this shampoo is that it lathers up really easily and produces a very thick, creamy foam that makes your hair feel instantly moisturised. The lather almost felt like a padding, which after I washed it off, helped to thicken my hair and give it some much needed volume. While it doesn't make it as frizzy as Big, it didn't feel as thin as I'm normally used to, which was a blessing.

As I mentioned above, the main problem I had with this shampoo was that it tends to shrink quicker than most of Lush's other solid shampoo bars. Whereas I would normally expect something like New or Seanik to last a good 3 months, I wouldn't say that this would last much longer than 2 months. Having said that, it doesn't shrink considerably much more than other bars so as long as it's kept dry between usage, this will last you a long time, and still works out cheaper than liquid alternatives. 

Overall, this is a great hair shampoo for those who want to work some moisture back into their hair and makes a good alternative to Gentil Lentil, while this latter shampoo still remains a limited edition luxury. While it's not favourite, this is one that I'll alternate alongside my regular choices and will definitely use this when I feel my hair is lacking that fullness.

Karma Komba Solid Shampoo Bar

As far as solid shampoos go, there is little that they can really do wrong, which is why I find myself confused when one of Lush's unique discs does't work very well for me or my hair. Luckily, these negative experiences are far and few between, and in the case of this particular one, there is very little I can think of to tarnish its name.

Karma Komba was actually one of the first solid shampoo bars to grace my life - a decision I made solely because it shared its scent with the Karma range. With a body lotion, shower gel, liquid perfume and bath bomb amongst many other products, I couldn't think of anything better than completing the set by washing my hair with the fragrance as well.

Despite this, I do have to be very careful when it comes to the products I use on my locks. After years of dying, bleaching, blow-drying and straightening, my hair is still very hesitant to trust me with anything that I do, and it's certainly quick to react when I use something it disagrees with.

When reading the description of this particular shampoo bar, I wasn't initially bowled over by its properties. While most of Lush's shampoos have the ability to either stimulate hair growth, moisturise, repair or eradicate dandruff, Karma Komba didn't really have much to say for itself, and this worried me somewhat.

Luckily, I discovered very quickly that this shampoo is actually amazing. Although the first couple of washes seemed to leave my hair feeling rather frizzy and not as moisturised as others have done so, it didn't take long for this to be rectified - creating a soft, shiny and very radiant looking head of hair that stayed in this good condition for a good couple of days before I had to wash again.

Containing patchouli, sweet orange, lavender and lemongrass, this fruity-smelling shampoo bar has all of the key ingredients to clean your hair and scalp, calm any irritation, reduce and eradicate dandruff and keep your head looking and feeling well-balanced and healthy. While I'm lucky enough that I don't suffer from dandruff, after using this for a couple of days, I noticed that it had cleared up a number of scratches that I had somehow managed to inflict on myself, and it also worked with the natural highlights of my hair to bring out the vividity without stripping or dampening the natural hair colour already present.     

Unfortunately, although other reviewers have expressed their love of the smell, I can't say that I was able to pick up enough of the smell to really comment on it. Although my bar was a fresh one, I found that the fragrance was very weak -nothing at all like the bubble bar or the body lotion, and this was slightly disappointing for someone who was wanting bursts of the Karma fragrance to keep me company throughout the day.   

Having said this, I don't think the lack of fragrance takes away from the bar at all - it just meant that I was able to use different conditioners alongside this and not worry that the different scents would clash at all. Furthermore, the fact that my hair looked and felt incredible was much more important and far more impressive to let this aspect dampen my spirits. 

As with all of Lush's shampoo bars, Karma Komba is very easy to lather up and coats your hair with a thick and very creamy lather that immediately begins to clean and soften upon impact. In fact, I would recommend that you're quite scrupulous when it comes to the application of this shampoo and only lather it across your hair for about 2-3 seconds. I say this because my bar only lasted me for two months when most of Lush's solid shampoo bars tends to last me at least three months.

On the positive side, my hair now has a natural shine to it which really brings out my highlights - this is without making it look greasy or flattening it at all. In the two weeks that I have been using this shampoo bar, I have not noticed any fading of my hair dye, and if anything it's only heightened the different colours that are naturally present in my locks.

While I wish that Karma Komba fragrance was strong enough to remain on me for longer, I cannot really fault how it works on my hair. This will definitely be a shampoo I buy regularly - especially in the summer months when, alongside the sun, this bar will help to bring out my natural highlights and give my hair a wonderful, natural shine.

While I wish that Karma Komba fragrance was strong enough to remain on me for longer, I cannot really fault how it works on my hair. This will definitely be a shampoo I buy regularly - especially in the summer months when, alongside the sun, this bar will help to bring out my natural highlights and give my hair a wonderful, natural shine.
