A New Break In The Lockerbie Bombing?

New York Times: 2 Lockerbie Bombing Suspects, Libyans, Sought by U.S. and Scotland

LONDON — Scottish and American prosecutors are asking the Libyan government for help tracking down two suspects in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, the terrorist attack that brought down Pan Am Flight 103, killing 270 people.

“The lord advocate and the U.S. attorney general have recently agreed that there is a proper basis in law in Scotland and the United States to entitle Scottish and U.S. investigators to treat two Libyans as suspects in the continuing investigation into the bombing of flight Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie,” a spokesman for Frank Mulholland, the lord advocate, or top prosecutor, for Scotland said in a statement on Thursday.

‘Scotland’s letter asked for judicial assistance’.

The Maltese courts have been asked to gather fresh evidence connected to the 1988 Lockerbie disaster, The Times has learnt.

Hearings took place behind closed doors last week before Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit. Several Maltese witnesses were called to testify.

The court appears to be reviewing evidence connected to travel logistics but no further information could be obtained from Maltese or Scottish sources.

Relatives of American victims of the Lockerbie bombing today demanded the British government bring to justice the former Libyan foreign minister after he defected to the UK.

Musa Kusa is said to have been the brains behind the 1988 bombing of the Pan Am flight - which killed 270 people - and was today being questioned in a 'secure location' in the UK after defecting following pressure from British intelligence.

President Obama Wants The Lockerbie Bomber Siezed As A Condition Of Support For The Rebels In Libya If They Succeed In Toppling Gaddafi

Barack Obama Orders Lockerbie Bomber al-Megrahi Be Seized -- Mirror

Barack Obama will demand the Lockerbie bomber as the price of supporting a new government in Libya.

The US President says the deportation of freed Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi is a condition of him backing the rebels if they win power.

Mr Obama wants Megrahi to be tried in the States for putting a bomb on the New York-bound jet that blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988, a crime for which he was convicted by a Scottish court

Cancer-stricken Megrahi has disappeared in Libya where he has been living after being released from jail because he supposedly had only months to live,

My Comment: A little late to the dance .... but I doubt that Megrahi will be alive when this happens (i.e. if Gaddafi falls).

The Lockerbie Deal -- Vanity Fair

In 2009 the convicted Lockerbie bomber was sent home to Libya from a Scottish prison on grounds of “compassionate release”—he had only three months to live, authorities said. A year and a half later the man is still alive—and a Vanity Fair investigation reveals new details about the business interests and private dealings that lay behind the prisoner’s release. At the heart of the matter: the cozy and “profitable relationships” between the Blair government and Qaddafi’s Libya.

Abdelbasset al-Megrahi, convicted in 2003 of plotting the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town, was released to his native Libya in Aug. 2009 after a Scottish doctor testified that he had three months to live.

The doctor at the centre of the increasingly bitter international debate over the early release of the Lockerbie bomber has spoken to the Observer in his first interview since his expert evidence was used to justify the decision.

Talking ahead of Friday's first anniversary of the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, Professor Karol Sikora strongly attacked the way his prognosis was portrayed. The leading cancer specialist said he would have made his evidence "more vague" if he could have foreseen that it was going to be interpreted as a fact that the convicted terrorist was going to die within three months of being released from Scotland's Greenock prison.

Scottish Government Pressed To Release Medical Advice That Led To Lockerbie Bomber’s Release -- New York Times

LONDON — Ten days before the first anniversary of the release of the Lockerbie bomber, the Scottish government on Tuesday came under fresh pressure to justify its decision to release the bomber, Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, on medical grounds.

The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Labor party opposition in the Scottish assembly demanded that the government publish full details of the medical advice that led Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to rule that Mr. Megrahi, serving a life sentence for the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in which 270 people died, should be released on compassionate grounds because he was suffering from advanced prostate cancer that made it likely that he had less than three months to live.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Four U.S. senators have written to the Foreign Secretary curtly demanding more information to help clear up the "public pall" over the release of the Lockerbie bomber to Libya.

In an accusing tone rarely used with the United States' closest ally, the senators said it appeared British trade interests with Libya had "won out over justice" in last year's release of the man convicted of the 1988 bombing of an airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland.

"It would behoove all of us if you can bring greater transparency to these matters," the four senators told Foreign Secretary William Hague.

US Publishes Megrahi Release Letter -- BBC

The US government has published a letter sent to First Minister Alex Salmond before the release of the Lockerbie bomber.

Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi was convicted of murdering 270 people in 1988, and was freed on compassionate grounds last year because he is terminally ill.

It was claimed the US told Mr Salmond compassionate release was "preferable" to a transfer to a Libyan jail.

The letter confirmed this but it called for him to stay in Scotland if freed.

It said: "The US is not prepared to support Megrahi's release on compassionate release or bail.
