Funny Face FUN Bar

Before the Lush Kitchen released both this and the popular Keep It Fluffy Bath Bomb earlier this year, I had read about this amazing scent family but had never had the privilege of trying anything out first hand. While I saw the potential in the bath bomb when it arrived, I wasn't particularly bowled over by its performance. For this reason, it wasn't until this little beauty came into my life that I was finally able to appreciate how incredible this fragrance is, and now I dream of getting my hands on a fresh bottle of the liquid perfume.

Funny Face FUN Bar first made an appearance at the Lush Summit event earlier this year - a product that was initially overlooked because of the excitement surrounding many of the other exclusives that had made themselves known at the same time. However, a little hype was enough to get the Lush community into a bit of a frenzy, and the product sold out very quickly in the Lush Kitchen a few weeks later.

Containing both vanilla and jasmine, this limited edition FUN Bar has an aroma that is so beautifully delicate, that it is this very subtlety that makes it as exquisite as it is. Showcasing a sweet and rather musky floral scent, there is something rather innocent and child-like about this smell - yet one that also offers something that is quite old-fashioned - to my senses at least.
It's what I would describe as being a very light, feminine fragrance. The notes of vanilla and rose really compliment each other - producing a musky, almost powdery floral aroma that is as sweet as it is sensual. It's a very 'pink' smelling fragrance, and reminds me a little of the scent you get when using a powderpuff.

Despite the light, delicate floral smells, there is something very foody about it at times. Don't get me wrong: it's not a smell that tantalises your tastebuds - just one reminiscent of icing sugar and sweet things - a powdery collaboration of what you might expect an old jar of marshmallows to smell like, from an old-fashioned sweet shop.

Despite the subtly of the overall fragrance, I was really surprised to discover that the scent was robust enough to last on the skin. Furthermore, I was impressed that I could still smell remnants of the aroma a good while after I had exited the shower. While it wasn't exactly the most moisturising affair (none of the FUN bars can offer this much), it did leave me feeling soft and clean - perhaps a little more successfully than most soaps would.

As with all of Lush's FUN bars, you can use this one in replacement of a shower gel, bubble bar or shampoo. To create bubbles in your bath, simply break off the amount that you wish to use and hold it under the running water. If you're using it in the shower, take a small grape-sized piece, add a little water and lather between your hands.
My only warning about Funny Face is that you have to ensure that the product is kept both cool and dry in between uses. In addition, you need to ensure that the bar is stored in a container if you wish to keep it in the bathroom. If left exposed, FUN Bars will sweat and melt, and leave a horrible mess all over the counter it's perched on.

Overall, this product has done nothing but intensify my cravings for either a perfume or a body lotion in this fragrance, and I only hope that Lush will satisfy these urges at some point in the near future. I also hope that this FUN Bar makes a reappearance as well, as I could happily buy a couple more to tide me over.

Amelie Mae Fun Bar

Reflecting on the various scented FUN bars that Lush have released over the years, I really wish that they had the incentive to do the same with their shower gels. While I am very much in love with the jellies, gels and creams that the company have brought out over the last five years, there has been some superior choices made in the FUN range - this one being no exception.

To coincide with the global Gorilla Perfume tour, Amelie Mae FUN was released and sold in small batches at the various shows - available alongside most of the Volume 4 perfumes that were featured in the showcase. Sharing its scent with the liquid perfume of the same name, this gorgeous looking bar is exquisite in every way, and may even trump the fragrance itself.

Created by Simon Constantine for his youngest daughter Amelie Mae, this FUN bar is not only a homage to one of the perfumer's biggest achievements, but it's also rather fitting, given that FUN is primarily designed with children in mind. Sporting bright shades of both green and pink, this limited edition also happens to be one of the most attractive FUN bars to date, and I couldn't wait to rip the wrapper off and use it for myself.

Featuring notes of lavender, ylang ylang and rose, you would expect Amelie Mae to offer a highly floral fragrance. While there is definitely a floral theme running throughout, there is something rather sweet and playful about this scent as well. As I said in my review of the liquid perfume version, if you think you are able to imagine what this smells like from the ingredients list alone, you are most likely going to be proved wrong.

From the wrapper, I get what I can only describe as a juicy rose smell - one that does have traits of the popular Rose Jam family, albeit sweeter and perhaps a little more jam-like. There is also a thread of fruitiness running through, which reminds me a little of raspberry bubblegum, but again I would be underselling it if I said this was all I could detect.

Much like the perfume version, the gentle note of lavender is very subtle in the mix, and almost adds a base that all of the other components rest on. You can definitely smell that the lavender is there, but the other components make much more of an impression on me.
There is something fruity about this FUN bar that makes me salivate when I smell it, and I love that it offers something quite playful and youthful. However, there is also something a little mature about the notes of lavender and violet that make it as delectable as it is sophisticated.

Although it is not as moisturising as any of the products that you may replace it with, for the price tag it is great value for money. I found that when used across my skin, the scent was really strong and stayed with me for a good hour after I had towelled myself down. In fact, I am now convinced that Lush need to bring out a body lotion version because it would be delicious.

My only warning about this and every one of Lush's FUN bars, is that you have to ensure that the rest of the product is kept both cool and dry in between uses. In addition, you need to ensure that the bar is stored in a container if you wish to keep it in the bathroom. If left exposed, FUN Bars will sweat and melt, and leave a horrible mess all over the counter it's perched on.
Overall, this may in fact be my favourite FUN Bar to date. It smells exactly like the perfume, although I would even go as far as to say that it may even be slightly stronger than the fragrance itself. I really hope this is made available in the near future - for everyone who loves this scent, or for those who has not had the opportunity to try this out for themselves, as it is truly delicious.

Snow Fairy FUN Bar

Needless to say, I don't think the Snow Fairy family really needs any sort of introduction - it's one of those products that most fans either fall into Lush because of, or hear about pretty soon after making their first purchase. Surprisingly, you may be interested to know that while the shower gel is a staple member of every Christmas release, and there hasn't been a year gone by when Lush haven't brought out something different in the same fragrance, it's not a particular favourite of many people high up in the company.

Having said this, Snow Fairy is a fantastic gateway into the vast and rather wonderful world of Lush, and it is the original product that inspired me to invest in their products in the first place. The aroma is very easily accessible to most people, and it also happens to be rather sensually pleasing - especially around Christmas time when a lot of consumers are looking to satisfy their sweet-tooth in ways other than food.

For this reason, I wasn't at all surprised when I discovered that Lush were bring out Snow Fairy FUN as part of the seasonal range this year. Alongside Father Christmas Bath Bomb, Snow Fairy Body Conditioner and Fairy Dust, this latest format is just another reminder of how much demand there is for this scent. Despite not being particularly enamoured with the idea, I bought a couple of bars nonetheless, and found that it was actually more enjoyable than I had original envisaged.

Sporting a pink, white and gold design, this new release is everything as magical as you would expect Snow Fairy FUN to be. I honestly couldn't think of three better colours to use, and it makes a very pretty addition to anyone's Christmas stocking - male or female. Furthermore, the inclusion of a paper wand and wings to add detail to possible sculptures, means that there are hours of fun to be had from this seasonal item.

Impressively, I only had to remove the outer packaging to establish that this FUN bar smelled near on identical to the original shower gel. As with most products in this scent, the sickly-sweet notes of pear drops and bubblegum and candy floss are often lost somewhat, and I find that the fragrance can be both dampened, and not as rich as it is in the shower gel format. However, much like the body conditioner, I found that Snow Fairy FUN offered the same delicious sugary coma that the gel presents, and this excited me even more to try it out.

As with all FUN bars, this one can be used as a shampoo; as a replacement for a shower gel; or crumbled under a running tap to produce bubbles much like a regular bubble bar would. In the latter circumstance, Snow Fairy FUN produces a light pink water, which is nothing to write home about but works as a great base for a bath cocktail.

As a shower gel, the item works really well - lathering up with ease and producing a light, fluffy lather to clean yourself with. Despite the vividity of the pink and gold sections on the bar, I found that the lather wasn't as colourful as some of the other FUN bars. This I see as a positive because splatters can occur when using any of the FUN bars, and while it doesn't stain your skin or the bath tub, it has been known to leave marks on my walls and towels if left unnoticed.

In use, this seasonal FUN bar boasts the same strength of smell as the shower gel, and I was able to detect delicate hints of sweetness on my skin for a short while after exiting the shower. However, it was by no means as generous as the gel format is when it came to longevity. Neither was it as moisturising on my body as the original gel, although it would definitely benefit those with sensitive skin, as it's far gentler on the skin due to talcum powder and corn starch base.

Overall, a single bar lasted me around six to eight weeks, which is a few weeks short of how long a 100g bottle of the shower gel would see me through. In addition, it was a little trickier to store without exposing it to unwanted moisture, and I had to make a conscious effort to pat it down after each shower to ensure that it didn't shrink in between uses.

This is not a product that's going to replace the best-selling shower gel any time soon, although it does offer a lot for what is ultimately a bar of talc and perfume. This would make a great stocking filler and bring a little 'FUN' back into bath time routines for those who have children to comprehend with. However, for those who don't need any encouragement to bathe, Snow Fairy Shower Gel is better value for money and the one that I will turn to the next time I need to fix.

Quantitative Ingredients: Corn Starch (Zea Mays), Talc, Glycerine, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Synthetic Musk, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Fragrance, Radiant Gold, Snowflake and Soft Pink Glimmer Lustre (Mica, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides).

Vegan?: Yes.

Reindeer And Robin FUN Bar

Fun is always a product that I forget to use - what with the extortionate number of shower gels and jellies that I currently own. Aside from any seasonal releases and limited editions, I never feel the need to add a bar to my basket when I'm picking up my regular products or simply browsing a store. Yet it's one that I rekindle my love for whenever I remember to take one into the bathroom with me.

Designed to be both affordable and fun, these bars are as versatile and as effective as they are great value for money, and are the perfect stocking filler for fans old and new. For children, they offer a great incentive to have a bath, where they can get creative and make the experience a little more interesting for themselves; for adults, we can reap all of the benefits of this multi-use item while also satisfying that inner child at the same time.

Reindeer And Robin FUN is one of three new limited edition versions to make an appearance this season, and is perhaps one of my all-time favourite FUN variations over all. Sporting a brown, red, white and yellow design; a set of paper antlers and some dairy free chocolate buttons for decoration, this bar is all set for you to make your very own array of Christmas animals.

While it may be the least visually beautiful out of the three seasonal FUN bars (who really wants to wash themselves with a brown soap?), you only have to peel back the wrapper to reveal a fragrance so delicious, that you'd be hard-pressed not to want to eat it.

Containing both lime oil and pepper oil, this FUN bar is described as being cola-scented, and I have to say that this is exactly what my initial impression of it was when I tried it out for the first time. The lime oil is not as sharp or as citrusy as the likes of Calacas and Nightwing. Instead, it's a very warming, creamy fruity smell - a little like a lime-scented buttercream on top of a vanilla cupcake.

Alongside this, the black pepper adds a rounded, rather aromatic element to the FUN bar, that doesn't smell anything like the spicy condiment that you grind over your food, nor like the rich, peppery note that's found in anything Lord Of Misrule scented. Instead, it almost deepens the lime smell so that it's far more long-lasting when in use and slightly different to anything else that Lush have released with lime as the key ingredient.

It reminds me of cola bottle candy, just without the fizzy element that is normally present because of the sugar. While it's definitely a very foody smell, and not one that I'd say is in any way complex, it is really delicious - one that children and adults with a sweet tooth will definitely enjoy. Furthermore, when a chocolate chip slips into the piece you're using, you get a rich, decadent note of chocolaty goodness to contend with as well. Yum!

As with all of Lush's versatile bars, this one can be used in a variety of different ways - crumbled under the running tap to aid a bubble bath, or massaged into the hair for an alternative to shampoo. The most popular choice is to break a small piece off and massage it across your skin, much like a solid shower gel. No matter how you choose to use this FUN bar, the same results are always heeded; your hair and skin will feel super soft and clean, and the wonderful fragrance will linger on your body for an hour or two after you've towelled yourself down.

This particular bar produces creates either a rusty-red or brown lather (depending on what part of the bar you use) and smells really strong throughout the entire experience. At first, I was a little worried about staining as there were  quite a few splashes of brown across bath tub. However, I quickly discovered that these splodges wash off with ease. Having said that, I would recommend that you're careful when using this around anything that could stain, as I can imagine that if any of suds were to get onto clothing, it would cause a bit of a mess.

What is really great about Reindeer And Robin is that I could still detect the delectable scent on my skin over an hour after I had towelled myself down, and this stayed with me as I settled down to sleep. While I may have gone to bed with my mouth salivating, I sure enjoyed waking up to the smell of sweet limes on my pillow.

Overall, this is by no means a product that has changed my life, or indeed one that offers anything particularly ground-breaking. However, the smell is really beautiful and I will be buying a number of these before the seasonal products fly off the shelves for good.

Quantitative Ingredients: Cornflour, Talc, Glycerine, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Perfume, Persian Lime Oil, Aniseed Oil, Black Pepper Oil, Benzoin Resinoid, Gardenia Extract, *Citral, *Limonene, Bronze Splendour and Rosie Red Lustre, Colour 19140:1, Colour 19140, Colour 14700, Colour 17200, Dark Chocolate.

Vegan?: Yes.

Elf On The Shelf FUN Bar

The last couple of years has seen an explosion in the amount of new FUN bars that Lush have brought out for us, seasonal and regular. It seems that there is something very appealing about those scented tubes of squidgy dough, and the fact that they're great value for money as well as incredibly versatile means that I can envisage the empire of FUN will continue to expand with each and every passing year.

As expected, the seasonal range is no different this year - with three brand new variations to choose from, each with a very different fragrance to enjoy. Whether you're buying for yourself or grabbing a few for stocking stuffers, Elf On The Shelf is definitely one that I would wholeheartedly recommend that you try for yourself.

Sharing its scent with the now discontinued Jilted Elf Shower Jelly, this is the first time that vegans will be able to enjoy this fragrance as the aforementioned product unfortunately contained honey - a fact that has caused me many a heartache during my time as a Lushie. With such a unique smell, this is one that needs to be experienced by anyone in need of a 'pick me up' this winter, and the fact that this product will be readily available across the world fills me with joy.

The fragrance found in this FUN bar is based on a cocktail that the creator came across whilst visiting New York, and although there isn't a trace of vodka in this brand new release, the shower jelly did feature the alcoholic beverage to help replicate the scent of the original drink. Perhaps it is this latter fact that makes Elf On The Shelf so much more appealing to me - I strongly believe that the aroma lends itself better in this format. Perhaps the exclusion of the vodka alongside the honey makes it slightly less potent and more emphasis can be placed on the fruiter side.

Containing grapefruit, cinnamon and ginger oil, the smell of this is rather difficult to describe and it's one you have to experience yourself to fully understand what I mean when I say the following. Firstly, the grapefruit is definitely the overall governing note. However, the fruit is not anywhere near as citrusy or tart as the likes of Happy Hippy or Bom Perignon Bath Bomb. It reminds me more of the grapefruit slices you can buy in tins, where they've lost their sourness and reside in more of a gentle, sweet and very pleasing fruity smell.

Alongside this, both the cinnamon and the ginger thread layers of spice without being too overpowering. You can smell the warmth of both ingredients from get go - they offer a fragrance that almost reminds me of spicy tea, yet neither takes away any of the natural sweetness of the fruit. They remind me slightly of old-school chewy sweets but I cannot for the life of me place the exact sweet it's almost identical to.

What you should consider is the fact that this aroma smells like absolutely nothing else that Lush have ever released before. There is no point me trying to compare the scent to other items - it's as original as they come and this is such a great selling point to me.

As if the smell wasn't enough, I could not believe just how strong the fragrance was when in use, and even more impressive was how strong it was on the skin and how long it lingered on me afterwards. I found that I could smell traces of this aroma some 4 hours after I had used the bar and this has never happened to me with any of Lush's FUN before.

Whether or not it's because this year's FUN bars are preservative free, but Elf On A Shelf also happens to be the smoothest and most gentlest FUN bar I have ever tried. While some can feel quite starchy and gloopy - two traits I put down to the corn flour and talc, this particular variation was light and soft and lathered up a treat when stimulated with water.

As with any FUN bar, you can hold a small amount under the running water to create a bubble bar, use a smidgen in replacement of your regular shower gel or soap, or even lather a little in your hair to use as an alternative to shampoo. Whichever way you decide to indulge in your FUN, just know that this is easily one of my favourite favourites and definitely a product I am going to want to stock up before the season is out.

Quantitative Ingredients: Cornflour, Talc, Glycerine, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cinnamon Leaf Oil, Ginger Oil, Grapefruit Oil, Gardenia Extract, Limonene, Eugenol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Lillal, Coumarin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Perfume, Rosie Red Lustre, Colour 14700, Colour 42090, Paper Legs.
