The Independent: Angela Merkel calls for cooperation with Russia in fight against Isis amid tensions over alleged election interference
German Chancellor says terrorism is ‘one area where we have the same interests’.
Angela Merkel has called on Europe and its allies to cooperate with Russia in the fight against Isis in spite of tensions over Syria, Ukraine, alleged cyber attacks and the propagation of “fake news”.
“The joint fight against Islamic terrorism is one area where we have the same interests and we can work together,” the German Chancellor told the annual Munich Security Conference.
The US Vice President was among world leaders in the audience for the speech, which came amid continued disputes over Russia’s alleged interference in elections in the US and Germany.

Angela Merkel told top members of her party on Sunday that she wants to run for a fourth term as German chancellor in next year's election, senior party sources told Reuters, after months of speculation about one of the world's most powerful women.
Despite a voter backlash over her open-door migrant policy, the conservative is seen as a stabilizing force in Europe amid uncertainty caused by Britain's vote to leave the European Union and the election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president.
Merkel told leading figures in her Christian Democrats (CDU) party in Berlin on Sunday about her intentions, several participants said. The meeting is to prepare for a party conference in December, the last before the election.

Angela Merkel has said the EU needs to stop other countries following Britain out of the door amid market fears that the bloc is 'no longer governable' after Brexit.
The German Chancellor told her conservative party board in a conference call that it was necessary to prevent other European Union members going down the same path as Britain.
Merkel is also said to have revealed that international financial markets are concerned the EU is 'no longer governable' in the wake of Britain's exit vote.

WNU editor: If there is one person to blame for the Brexit vote it is German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Her open border policy and invitation to refugees to migrate to Germany has caused enormous damage to the countries directly impacted by this crisis ... and it is a crisis that is further compounded by her refusal to consult and debate the merits of her policy. This arrogance has only fuelled anti-EU resentment, and is helping to shift the debate (and voters) to reject her and what the EU stands for. And while she is now singing a different tune in whcih there is now a need to secure borders, create jobs, and improve internal security .... German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed “outrage” over attacks against Syrian civilians as an offensive by the regime’s troops backed by Russian air strikes drive thousands of refugees to the Turkish border.
"We’re not only shocked, but also outraged, at what’s happened in terms of human suffering in the past few days for tens of thousands of people through bomb attacks, including attacks above all from Russia," Merkel told reporters in Ankara after meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
