New Aspects of the Role of Organisms and Detritus in the Detoxification System of the Biosphere; S. A. Ostroumov; Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University, Moscow, 119991 Russia; Received September 25, 2016; Abstract— This article presents the recent author's discovery of new aspects of the participation of organisms in the detoxification system of the biosphere. Problems of detoxification of toxic environmental pollutants are analyzed. New author’s experimental data in combination with a large amount of information in the scientific literature gave rise to a new concept of the role of biogenic detritus and related nutrients in environmental detoxification (ex-living matter concept). This may be useful for the development of new technologies for remediation and decontamination of the environment. Keywords: biosphere, detoxification, pollution control, toxic chemical elements, immobilization, sorption, biogenic detritus, ex-living matter; INTRODUCTION. Study of the problem of detoxification of harmful substances in the biosphere is closely related to several areas of environmental chemistry. Many authors studied problems of migration and cycling of chemical elements in the biosphere [1–3], elemental composition of environmental objects [2–22] and other aspects of biosphere chemistry [18–49], and the role of organisms in the formation of certain chemical parameters of the habitat [5–7, 15–17, 50–79]. Studies of the chemical– biotic interactions [11, 12, 14–22, 25–47, 55, 67, 72– 75, 78–80] and accumulation of a large amount of information on the geochemical environment (see, e.g., [14–17, 21, 23, 47, 55, 73, 75, 80]) have revealed some unresolved issues, which leads to the need to reexamine the question of how organisms are involved in the transformation and detoxification of habitats. It is interesting to analyze how toxic chemical elements are neutralized in the biosphere during natural ecological and biogeochemical processes. New important relevant data are actively accumulating in experimental studies conducted in the laboratory of biogeochemistry of the environment of the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences [15, 16], as well as in many laboratories of the world [81, 82]. V.I. Vernadsky emphasized the importance of studying migration of chemical elements in the biosphere and relations between the activity of living matter and the physicochemical characteristics of the biosphere [5–7, 74], as well as the importance of various ways of the influence of living matter on the environment. Data on the chemistry of the biosphere [3, 4, 15–17], geochemical environment, and factors affecting the concentrations of chemical chemical elements [3, 4, 15–22, 25–47, 55, 67, 72–74], migration of elements and biogeochemical flows in the biosphere [67, 22, 28, 30], and self-purification of the environment from chemical pollutants [28, 63–69] rapidly accumulate. The new data require additional analysis, so that it is necessary to formulate appropriate generalizations. The objective of this analysis is to consider the role of organisms and substances derived therefrom (biogenic detritus and other detritus-like substances) in the detoxification system of the biosphere with account taken of our data. It is necessary to distinguish two aspects of the problem under study: (1) The role of living organisms during their vital activity; (2) The role of biogenic detritus and related substances of biological origin which were referred to ... A. Post to Citeulike A series of publications on the studies of phytotoxicity of chemicals (pollutants, ecotoxicants), carried out by the author and his research group, have been reviewed. Tests (bioassays) based on experiments with many higher plant species, both terrestrial and aquatic ones (macrophytes), were used in these studies. Among the chemicals tested there were various organic (synthetic detergents, surfactants, and pesticides) and some inorganic (e.g., metal oxide nanoparticles) compounds. New methods for bioassay using plant species never used before have been developed by the author. New facts of phytotoxicity of a synthetic detergent have been discovered and reported. Specifically, an aqueous solution of liquid detergent Frosch (Werner & Mertz, FRG) at a concentration of 0.25 mL/L (and higher concentrations) inhibited the elongation rate of seedlings of Lens culinaris higher plant species. Also, phytotoxicity of synthetic cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide has been reported for the first time. This surfactant at a concentration of 4 mg/L inhibited the elongation of Lens culinaris plant seedlings. The phytotesting methods contribute to the development of alternative approaches to studying the toxicity of chemicals through non-animal testing. less … New Aspects of the Role of Organisms and Detritus in the Detoxification System of the Biosphere Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2017-12-01) 87: 3190-3198 , December 01, 2017 By Ostroumov, S. A. Post to Citeulike General principles of the theory of polyfunctional role of biota in self-purification of water in aquatic ecosystems have been formulated. The theory includes the following elements: (1) energy sources for self-purification of aquatic ecosystems; (2) main functional units of the self-purification system; (3) main selfpurification processes; (4) contributions of major taxa to self-purification of aquatic ecosystems; (5) reliability of the system and mechanisms ensuring it; (6) self-regulation of biota; (7) response of the system to external stimuli (impacts); (8) analogy between an ecosystem and a bioreactor; (9) conclusions for nature conservation practice. The theory covers both freshwater and marine ecosystems. less … Biocontrol of water quality: Multifunctional role of biota in water self-purification Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2010-12-01) 80: 2754-2761 , December 01, 2010 By Ostroumov, S. A. Post to Citeulike 6 Citations The experimental data analysis, concepts, and generalizations in this article provide the fundamental elements of the qualitative theory of biocontrol of water quality in a systematized form. The theory covers water self-purification in freshwater and marine ecosystems. The theory is supported by the results of the author’s experimental studies of the effects exerted by some chemical pollutants including synthetic surfactants, detergents, and other xenobiotics onaquatic organisms. The theory provides a basis for remediation of polluted aquatic ecosystems including purification of water bodies and streams, and briefly present the qualitative theory of the self-purification mechanism of aquatic ecosystems, phytoremediation and other types of technologies. less … Issues of the Study of Detritus in Aquatic Systems Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2017-12-01) 87: 3244-3249 , December 01, 2017 By Sadchikov, A. P.; Ostroumov, S. A. Post to Citeulike In this paper, we present the analysis of the ecological roles of detritus and suspended particulate matter in aquatic ecosystems. New data that have been obtained for freshwater ecosystems of the central part of Russian Federation (Moscow Region, e.g., Mozhaiskoe Reservoir) have been included in the analysis. These new data include the results of studies of samples of water and detritus from the aquatic ecosystems. The review analysis addresses both freshwater and marine ecosystems. The multifunctional important role of detritus in aquatic ecosystems has been shown and exemplified using data for aquatic bodies of different trophic level, from oligotrophic to eutrophic. less … Phytotoxicity of a surfactant-containing product towards macrophytes Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2013-12-01) 83: 2614-2617 , December 01, 2013 By Ostroumov, S. A.; Solomonova, E. A. Post to Citeulike 3 Citations Extending the studies of surfactant-containing products, we have investigated the effect of the Liquid Crystal Concentrate detergent on aquatic macrophytes Elodea canadensis within laboratory microcosms. It has been shown that the detergent produced some negative influence on the macrophytes at 50–150 μL/mL (5–15 vol %). less … Immobilization of scandium and other chemical elements in systems with aquatic macrophyte Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2015-12-01) 85: 2929-2932 , December 01, 2015 By Ostroumov, S. A.; Johnson, Monique E.; Tyson, J. F.; Show all (4) Post to Citeulike 2 Citations The possibility of immobilization of scandium and other chemical elements by biogenic materials derived from an aquatic macrophyte was explored. The concentrations of scandium and some other chemical elements were measured in the dried biomass (mortmass) of aquatic plants Myriophyllum aquaticum. In the experiments, the mortmass was incubated in aquatic systems where some chemical elements were added to the aquatic medium. After the incubation, the concentrations of these chemical elements in the mortmass were measured using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), also referred to as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Increases in the concentrations of scandium and some other chemical elements (Ce, In, Se, Ru, Pd, U, and Zr) were observed in the biogenic material. less … Biosorption of copper by biomass of extremophilic algae Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2015-12-01) 85: 2961-2964 , December 01, 2015 By Ostroumov, S. A.; Shestakova, T. V.; Tropin, I. V. Post to Citeulike Copper and lead are among the most important chemical pollutants of the environment including hydrosphere. Interaction of these heavy metals with biomass of aquatic plant organisms including algae is an area of active research in ecological chemistry. We investigated the interaction of the biomass of unique extremophilic (thermophilic) algae Galdieria sulphuraria with these heavy metals in aquatic environment using stripping voltammetry. Biosorption of copper by the studied biomass from aquatic medium has been discovered; however, no biosorption of another heavy metal from aquatic environment with the biomass has been detected. The experiments with the mortmass of Galdieria sulphuraria have revealed no sorption of the heavy metals as measured by stripping voltammetry. The difference in the interaction of copper and lead with the algal biomass is important for deeper understanding of the biosorption phenomenon. The new data stimulated further interest to the concept of biogenic migration of chemical elements that was proposed by V.I. Vernadskii. The results contributed to the scientific basis for innovative biotechnology to decontaminate water. less … Study of the interactions between Elodea canadensis and CuO nanoparticles Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2011-12-01) 81: 2688-2693 , December 01, 2011 By Johnson, M. E.; Ostroumov, S. A.; Tyson, J. F.; Show all (4) Post to Citeulike 10 Citations Copper is one of the key heavy metals that pollute environment and constitute a serious threat to the health of humans and ecosystems. Copper may enter the aquatic environment in both soluble and nanoparticle form. It was previously found in a series of studies that nanoparticles, including those of several metal oxides, exercise both negative and positive effects on the higher plants which makes necessary further research on the interaction between metal oxide nanoparticles and plants. Interactions between aquatic plants and copper-containing nanoparticles were not sufficiently studied. The goal of this study was to contribute to the investigation of the interactions between CuO nanoparticles and the aquatic plant Elodea canadensis under the conditions of experimental microcosms. It was found that CuO nanoparticles demonstrated some phytotoxicity to Elodea canadensis. After the incubation of Elodea canadensis in the aquatic medium contaminated with CuO nanoparticles there was a significant increase (by two orders of magnitude) of the concentration of copper in the biomass of the plants. less … Removal of aluminum by aquatic plants Ceratophyllum demersum and Chara fragilis from water of experimental ecosystems Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2016-12-01) 86: 2978-2982 , December 01, 2016 By Poklonov, V. A. Post to Citeulike Changes in the concentration of the aluminum ions in water of experimental systems (microcosms) have been studied. The Al ion concentration was measured by the fluorescent method. As macrophytes for microcosm incubation served hornwort Ceratophyllum demersum and stonewort Chara fragilis, with the latter hydrobiont used for the first time in similar experiments. It has been convincingly proven that, in the microcosms with the aquatic plants tested, the Al ion concentration decreased much faster than in the macrophyte-free control microcosms. The data obtained suggest that Ceratophyllum demersum and Chara fragilis are promising candidates for phytoremediation applications. ** The role of mercury in the processes of vital activity of the human and mammalian organisms Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2010-12-01) 80: 2694-2703 , December 01, 2010 By Barygina, V. V.; Aref’eva, A. S.; Zatsepina, O. V. Post to Citeulike 2 Citations Mercury belongs to one of the most common heavy metals that have high biological activity in relation to human and animal cells. However, the physiological role of mercury in the metabolism of eukaryotic cells is still unclear. The given review provides current information on certain properties of mercury, the mechanisms of penetration of Hg (II) inside cells, its genotoxic and cytotoxic effects, as well as the role of mercury in the induction of autoimmune processes involving production of autoantibodies to the nucleolar protein fibrillarin. less … Molecular polarizability of organic compounds and their complexes: L. Molar volumes and steric structure of some schiff bases and their structural analogs in infinitely dilute solutions Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2007-04-01) 77: 596-603 , April 01, 2007 By Bulgarevich, S. B.; Burdastykh, T. V.; Selezneva, E. S. Post to Citeulike Molar volumes of a wide series of Schiff bases and their structural analogs, such as N-benzyl-ideneaniline N-oxides and azo compounds, in infinitely dilute solutions were determined. Analysis of the obtained values in terms of the additivity scheme showed that molecular fragments and substituting groups in these compounds are strongly solvated by solvent molecules, which leads to deviation of most molecules from the planar arrangement of the aryl moieties and bridging groups. Most compounds in which H-chelate rings are formed due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding are characterized by contraction of molar volumes, indicating their entropy stabilization in solution via release of solvent molecules from the solvate shell upon chelation. Methods for the determination of dipole moments and Kerr constants in solution can be simplified to a considerable extent for those compounds for which the additivity scheme was applied to calculate the molar volumes. more … Eutrophication of water bodies — A global environmental problem Russian Journal of General Chemistry (2014-12-01) 84: 2483-2488 , December 01, 2014 By Frumin, G. T.; Gildeeva, I. M. Post to Citeulike 3 Citations The results of Russian and foreign studies on the process of eutrophication of water bodies are summarized. The main sources of export of nutrients in water bodies with catchment areas are discussed in the article. The toxins produced by blue-green algae and their effects on organisms are considered. Critical total phosphorus loads are estimated for some lakes of the Russian Federation and five largest lakes of China. **

** ABSTRACT:
As a result of the author’s studies of filter-feeders (previous publications in Russian: Doklady akademii nauk [DAN], 1998, Vol. 362, P. 574-576; Doklady akademii nauk [DAN], 2001, Vol. 378, P. 283-285), it is clear that the filtering activity of populations of filter-feeders in natural habitats might be significantly reduced if the concentrations of some pollutants reach certain levels. The role of filter-feeders as factors of water purification in ecosystems is so important that their inhibition is a danger for the entire ecosystem. The author emphasizes that not only the biodiversity of filter-feeders but also their level of functional (filtration) activity is to be protected. In order to do so, the author suggested establishing a new type of protected areas whose main purpose is to protect functionally active populations of filter-feeders, including bivalves and other organisms. Those protected areas could be named hydrobiological (some variants: biofiltering, or malacological) reserves (some variants: refuges, sanctuaries, etc.). The author formulated 5 principles of nature conservation requirements in malacological and hydrobiological reserves (Tabl. 3). Among them is principle 2, "conservation of filtration activity of organisms and populations". The paper contains data on how 5 detergents (1-50 mg/L) inhibited the filtration activity of Unio tumidus, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Crassostrea gigas (Tabl. 2); on effects on the efficiency of elimination (EEE) of suspended matter from water were measured (Tabl. 2); on the number of days (0.3 – 10) needed to filter the volume of aquatic (freshwater and marine) ecosystem by the local bivalves (a review of data from literature) (Tabl. 1). "I suggest that the existing system of protected terrestrial and water areas should be supplemented with special sites intended to conserve populations of filter-feeders. In addition to biodiversity conservation, these populations should be conserved because they fulfill a very important biogeocenotic function of water filtration and purification" (p.149). "The system of five principles…is proposed to provide an ecological basis of the environment conservation conditions at these sites (malacological and hydrobiological reserves)" (p.149).].

Fundamental innovation in conservation biology. Evaluation: Excellent;
The text of the review:
This paper presents a fundamental innovation in conservation biology. The traditional concept in conservation biology is that these 2 things are the priorities: (1) conservation of species (genetic pool of all biological species); and (2) protection of habitats. The paper under review adds the important third thing to be protected: (3) normal functioning of the living organisms as components of ecosystem machinery. The author, the award-winning researcher Dr. Sergei Ostroumov, discovered and described the third vital priority using an aquatic ecosystem as an example. He underlined the important role of the normal functioning of bivalve mollusks as water filters. By the water filtration, the mollusks contribute to water purification. The proper water quality is needed as a condition for survival of many other species of the aquatic ecosystem. His experiments demonstrated that some chemical pollutants can affect and decrease water filtration activity of mollusks. Therefore, this vital function of bivalve mollusks and other filter-feeders needs attention and protection. This paper is excellent, useful and recommended to all involved in applied ecology, protection of environment, and management of water resources.
