CPR for Dogs and Cats – You Could Save Your Pet’s Life!

Dr. Christopher Byers/CriticalCareDVM

Just the other night, a video popped up in my FB stream, of a distraught woman running into a police station with a lifeless dog. The police removed what the dog has choked on and revived him. All ended well though I didn't really appreciate being made to cry in the middle of the night.

What would have happened to the pup, though, were there no police station nearby? Would you know how to save your choking dog's life?

The Mystery Behind this Dog’s Sudden Behavior Change

Dr. Marty Becker

When it comes to your dog's well-being, paying attention to CHANGE is the key. When your dog starts limping, that's a change. When your dog starts having diarrhea, that's a change. Every change is significant, and there is a reason behind it, however subtle or strange it might be.

"What would you think if your senior dog suddenly started lying across your bedroom door every night — something he has literally never done before?"

With our late Roxy, I'd be flabbergasted if she stopped doing that. She always found a place smack in the middle where she could be the most in the way, making people trip over her in the dark. We figured she did that so she could keep an eye on everybody wherever they might have been. We called her the metric dog. For her, this was normal. If she suddenly started laying in a corner, that would be a concern.

That's why the word CHANGE is more important than any, however comprehensive, list of signs and symptoms to be on a lookout for. What is normal for one dog is abnormal for another.

So why the dog in question started lying across the bedroom door? He does have arthritis but had that before the change. Find out in Dr. Becker's article.

Interview with Clean Label Project Executive Director Jaclyn Bowen

Dr. Patrick Mahaney

What do you think is the most significant drawback to dogs living in our civilized world? By sharing in our lives, dogs acquired access to shelter, food, and medical care. But they also got something they did not bargain for--the world of toxins.

Toxins can be found in the air, soil, water, and even in food. Let's not kid ourselves, toxins make a great contribution to poor health and illness. How do you protect yourself and your dog from them if they cannot be seen? If somebody hit you with a lead brick, you'd know it was a lead brick. But if the lead were in the water or food, you are not likely to be aware of it.

The Clean Label Project is a nonprofit organization that uses data and science to reveal the contents of America's best-selling consumer products. They test for 130 harmful environmental and industrial contaminants and toxins and translate the results into product ratings. Yes, the include dog food and treats as well.

Strangely, though, Acana, which I like, rated quite low. So I'm not sure what to make of the results. I got my pet food store on it.

Be A.W.A.R.E. Of Online Pet Pharmacies

Dr. Anna Coffin/Guthrie Pet Hospital

I admit I'm a yellowbelly. I don't like taking risks unless the reward is great enough to justify that. The reward for using online pet pharmacies is low cost. Saving a buck is great as long as you're actually getting what you think you're buying. Unfortunately, with online pet pharmacies, it isn't always so.

Would you knowingly put your dog at risk by buying a counterfeit, expired or improperly stored medication? You certainly would not. Yet, that could be what you get.

I am a yellowbelly. When it comes to my dog's medications or preventives, I only buy them from my vet or get a prescription to our local pharmacy. That is not to say there aren't any legitimate online pharmacies out there. Before you decide to use one of them, though, please do your homework.

Read Dr. Anna's article to find out what you should consider before ordering at an online pet pharmacy.
