The day after President Trump was inaugurated, women all around the world took part in the historic Women’s March. Since then, there has been renewed energy in women’s movements and commitments to ensure all women have their rights. Movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp have further exposed the systematic nature of sexual harassment and assault against women.
One in three women will experience violence in her lifetime. Experiencing violence prevents women from fully participating socially, economically and politically in their communities.
Malala Yousafzai said, “We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced.” For too long, women and girls have had to be silent about sexual and physical abuse. Women have had to live in fear, in the shadows because of violence. This madness must end.
