The irruption of the working world into the cinematographic field is rare enough to be
underlined. What is more, The Factory of Nothing, Portuguese Pedro Pinho's film, does it
with brio, and puts the package: three hours of film and political content assumed. ----
The story begins when workers at a lift factory in the suburbs of Lisbon surprise a team
that has brought the machines from their factory in the middle of the night. The next day,
the situation becomes clearer, when carnivorous frames come to explain to them that, faced
with the difficulties of their business, it would be more reasonable for them to leave
with a small nest egg. A situation that has seen hundreds of thousands of workers across
Europe and the world in this decade of crisis. ---- From there, the film will explore the
possibilities available to employees to get their head out of their situation. If inertia
and despair prevail first, the strike, the occupation, the resistance against the bosses
and the police who try to dislodge them, then the prospect of a cooperative recovery of
the factory, are then implemented. Even the hypothesis of the armed struggle is envisaged
- and quickly swept away - on the occasion of a very funny scene where a box of machine
guns dating from the revolution of the Carnations is dug up by the father of a worker.
This staging of the collective and self-management is salutary at a time when the
individualistic withdrawal threatens the whole of society and especially the working
class. This reality is not negated by the film: employees accept the blackmail of
management and leave with compensation. But it is solidarity that triumphs.

Beyond its content, the film finds its strength in a staging oscillating between almost
documentary narrative and poetic escapades, which culminates in a whimsical and fantastic
musical comedy scene, which seems to recall that the collective makes possible all dreams,
even to the workers and workers maimed by globalization.
