Dreamers are Americans in all but name – they were raised here, went to school here, they work and pay taxes here. They broke no immigration laws as they were brought here as children, yet they live in constant fear of deportation.
Unfortunately President Trump is trying to trade building a border wall and protections for asylum-seekers and children for the Dream Act. This act of pitting one issue against another is senseless and absurd.
Many individuals and children who arrive at our borders are seeking protection from harm. The majority of Central American refugees are fleeing persecution, gender violence, torture, including other forms of violence.
A border wall would have a devastating impact on the human rights of Native Americans. Any wall would cut right through tribal lands, directly impacting the lives and livelihood of Native American Nations.
Just like any American, Dreamers have built lives, families, and communities here. We can’t let them live in constant fear of deportation, or let those seeking asylum in the USA and the families being torn apart by the border feel the consequences of this border wall.
