A terrible human rights crisis is happening right now in Myanmar. Terrified Rohingya families — a Muslim ethnic minority — are being gunned down by the military in Myanmar.
This fall, entire villages were being burned to the ground, and the military was shooting anyone who tried to escape. The United Nations called this crisis “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.” Here at Amnesty International USA, we agree.
More than half of the people who have fled violence and atrocities in Myanmar are younger than 18. And at least 30% of the refugee population is younger than five-years-old. These children saw their parents, grandparents and siblings riddled by bullets. They saw their homes burnt to the ground. They fled, with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
If Myanmar has nothing to hide, it should allow United Nations investigators into the country. The United States of America can help by putting pressure on the government of Myanmar and making sure Aung San Suu Kyi lives up to her words of peace and unity for its people.
