Dear friends, The Myanmar military’s ethnic cleansing campaign is continuing its disastrous march. Just last month, Amnesty uncovered tragic stories of forced starvation, rape, abductions and looting of property. We’re mobilizing our online community of passionate people like you who are committed to uncovering the truth — in countries including Myanmar, where families have been torn apart. Amnesty crisis investigators have been working around the clock to document the powerful stories of persecuted people and to share them with the world. We need your support today to continue to uncover the truth and stop these atrocities. Here is one father’s harrowing story: Sona lived with his 20-year-old daughter, Rayna, who had a disability that left her unable to walk or speak. Their world was turned upside down when Myanmar soldiers surrounded their village and opened fire on their home. Sona told us, “Those who were young and strong were able to run out and survive. We struggled.” Sona’s son put Rayna on his shoulders, and the family slowly made their way toward a hill on the village’s edge. They heard the shooting get closer and closer. Sona had to make the toughest decision of his life. He left Rayna in an abandoned house, for safety. “We didn’t think we’d be able to make it. I told her to sit there. We’d come back.” After arriving on the hill, the family spotted the house where they had left her. The military had set it on fire. After the military left the village, Sona’s son returned to the house — where he found Rayna’s burnt body in the torched remains. Our crisis investigations team has documented this tragic story to spur the global community to stop these atrocities. But this is just one of too many others. Please make a donation to help us uncover the truth. With your support, we can continue to communicate the truth about what we find — ensuring the world cannot and does not look away from atrocities and people suffering. Thank you for your compassionate consideration today, Margaret Huang Executive Director Amnesty International USA | ||||||
