Allegany County Sheriff warns of scam

Allegany County Sheriff Rick Whitney would like to alert the community of a complaint that was received by another county sheriff’s office on February 4, 2018 regarding a telephone call to a county resident from an individual claiming to be a representative from the Civil Processing Division of the Sheriff’s Office.  The caller alleged that a civil fee had been court-ordered and must be paid by a prepaid Visa or debit card to avoid further legal action.
Please be aware that the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office does not contact individuals by phone about court-ordered judgements.  The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office will not ask for payment using a prepaid debit/credit card or wire transfer, nor will they ask for a credit card number over the phone.  Disregard any call from someone demanding cash payment and do not give out personal identifying information over the phone, unless you are sure you know the reason and to whom you are giving information to.
If you do receive a suspicious phone call that you’d like to report, please contact the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office by calling 911.
