Friends,
Laura Plummer is a British citizen who was just sentenced to three years of imprisonment in Egypt. All she did wrong was to bring £23 worth of prescription painkillers for her boyfriend, who suffers from chronic back pain. But these painkillers, Tramadol, whilst legal in the UK, are illegal in Egypt. Many of us could make a simple mistake like Laura did. And nobody should face losing years of their lives due to this. Sign now to show your support for Laura's release.
Laura wasn't hiding the pills; they were laying at the top of her suitcase. At the airport, she was reportedly held for five hours — without an interpreter — and was made to sign a 38-page statement in Arabic which she thought would mean she would be allowed to leave. But instead, she was arrested for drug smuggling and faced a criminal trial.
Laura feared she would face the death penalty in Egypt, and whilst she was spared that fate, she was sentenced to three years of imprisonment. As a result, her mental health is suffering and her family worries that she may not survive. Sign now to tell the Egyptian authorities to release Laura immediately.
Laura had been held in a 15ft by 15ft cell with 25 other women for almost three months before her sentencing. If the Egyptian authorities won't release her, the British Government must intervene. The Foreign Office say they are "supporting a British woman and her family following her detention in Egypt", but until she is home safe, we must keep up the pressure.
Thank you,
 Beth G.
