    4. The concept of aquatic biota as a labile and vulnerable component of the water self-purification system. Ostroumov SA. Dokl Biol Sci. 2000 May-Jun;372:286-9. Review. abstract available: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/215906004;

     also here, another link: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/215906004;
    Novelty: The paper presents some new ideas and new facts.
    ** NEW IDEAS: A new fundamental conceptualization of the role of biota in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems is proposed. According to the new conceptualization that was suggested by the author, the complex of aquatic organisms (aquatic biota) is a central, labile and potentially vulnerable component of the water self-purification system in aquatic ecosystems. This fundamental concept leads to substantial changes in the hierarchy of priorities for protection of biodiversity and environment. According to the concept suggested in this work, the maximum allowable concentrations (MACs) for specific substances should be established after taking into account the possible effects of pollutants on the water self-purification system. Possible effects on many organisms, including filter feeders, should be taken into consideration. Both inhibiting and stimulating effects of sublethal concentrations of pollutants are dangerous, because either of them may cause an imbalance in the complicated system of water self-purification. The fundamental concept suggested in this work heightens the level of priority of the sublethal effects of pollutants. The sublethal effects leading to changes in the functional activity of populations of aquatic organisms may cause an imbalance in the system of water self-purification. NEW FACTS: new data on toxic effects of organic chemicals (detergents) on functional activity of bivalve mollusks, namely on their filtration activity.

    NOVELTY: It is the first paper that reported two new experimental results with the great pond snail [Lymnaea stagnalis]. First, the new author’s experiments measured the mollusk-driven fluxes of the matter and chemical elements in a model ecosystem. Second, the authors got another innovative result: a discovery of new toxic effects of chemical pollutants. Namely, these biologically driven flows of the chemical elements were decreased by a chemical pollutant exemplified by a synthetic surfactant ( Surface-Active Agent , Quaternary Ammonium Compound). The fluxes of these chemical elements were studied: carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and silicon (Si).

This chemical exemplifies a new type of hazardous contaminants (pollutants) of water. Rotifers: Rotifers are an important part of the freshwater zooplankton, being a major foodsource and with many species also contributing to the decomposition of soil organic matter. Most rotifers are around 0.1–0.5 mm long , and are common in freshwater environments throughout the world. The word "rotifer" is derived from a Latin word meaning "wheel-bearer", due to the corona around the mouth that in concerted sequential motion resembles a wheel (though the organ does not actually rotate). The coronal cilia create a current that sweeps food into the mouth. Rotifers eat particulate organic detritus, dead bacteria, algae, and protozoans. They eat particles up to 10 micrometres in size. Like crustaceans, rotifers contribute to nutrient recycling. For this reason, they are used in fish tanks to help clean the water, to prevent clouds of waste matter.     EXPLANATION of the terminology: pellets are the particles of undigested matter (mainly biomass of undigested food) that the mollusks (the great pond snails and freshwater mussels) excrete so that these mollusks function as engines that drive the transfer of a significant amount of organic matter. NOVELTY: First measurements of concentrations of some chemical elements (C, N, P, Si, and Al) in the pellets of aquatic mollusks. The first measurements of the biogeochemical fluxes of those elements with the pellets. A discovery of a new type of geochemical fluxes of chemical elements in the biosphere: the vertical (downward) flux of the elements toward the bottom of freshwater ecosystems, via pellets of bivalves (freshwater mussels, Unio sp. and other species). The data obtained are consistent with the suggestion that carotenoid, bacteriochlorophyll and phenyldicarbaundecaborane responses are indicators of delta psi, while an atebrin response is an indicator of delta pH. The fluorescence of 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulphonate is affected both by delta psi and delta pH. Similar articles ;

    4. The concept of aquatic biota as a labile and vulnerable component of the water self-purification system. Ostroumov SA. Dokl Biol Sci. 2000 May-Jun;372:286-9. Similar articles 1 comment Select item 12852181

     https://www.researchgate.net/publication/200578650; Similar articles EXPLANATION of and comment on TERMINOLOGY: cationic amphiphilic compound = cationic surfactant, Surface-Active Agent, in this paper it is the cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA); a new toxic effect of this chemical was discovered: inhibition of water filtration by zooplankton, namely, by rotifers. This chemical exemplifies a new type of hazardous contaminants (pollutants) of water. Rotifers: Rotifers are an important part of the freshwater zooplankton, being a major foodsource and with many species also contributing to the decomposition of soil organic matter. Most rotifers are around 0.1–0.5 mm long, and are common in freshwater environments throughout the world. The word "rotifer" is derived from a Latin word meaning "wheel-bearer", due to the corona around the mouth that in concerted sequential motion resembles a wheel (though the organ does not actually rotate). The coronal cilia create a current that sweeps food into the mouth. Rotifers eat particulate organic detritus, dead bacteria, algae, and protozoans. They eat particles up to 10 micrometres in size. Like crustaceans, rotifers contribute to nutrient recycling. For this reason, they are used in fish tanks to help clean the water, to prevent clouds of waste matter.

В. О книге С.А. About the publications and works of S. A. Ostroumov. Fragments of the text that was published: Sergey A. Ostroumov … is the author of a scientific discovery (Certificate and Diploma No. 274). He discovered new bioeffects of surfactants and detergents and experimentally proved their ecological role as hazardous factors to water self-purification, discovered the component of the ecological mechanism of water self-purification that is most vulnerable to water pollution, proposed new fundamental concepts and terms of ecological chemoregulators, ecological chemoeffectors, chemical ecoregulators, the polyfunctional role of biota in water self-purification (Hydrobiologia, 2002, 469: 203-204), the level-block system of principles for the analysis of ecological hazards from man-made impact on the biota, synecological synergism of man-made impact (Doklady Akademii Nauk, 2001, 380: 714-717; DAN, 2001, 380: 847-849; DAN is the abbreviation for the title of the authoritative scientific edition, Reports to the Russian Academy of Sciences), inhibitory analysis in ecology (DAN, 2000, 375: 847), ecological repair and remediation, ecological clusters, proposed new parameters that characterize the role of organisms in ecosystem. S.A.Ostroumov proposed new modern conceptualization of ecosystem (DAN, 2002, 383: 571), and of the boundaries of ecosystems (Vestnik [=Bulletin] of Moscow University. Ser. Biol. 2003, 3: 43). He introduced new fundamental concepts of the principle of ecological uncertainty (Ecol. Stud. 2004, 7: 138), new typology of migrations of elements and integrated abiotic-biotic regulation of biogeochemical processes (Vestnik of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences 2002, 2 (No.3): 50), formulated the functions of the biota as a factor for stabilization of the environment and climatic system of the Earth (Vestnik of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences 2003, 3 (No.2): 59), discovered new types of hazards from chemical pollution. He formulated the theory of biotic self-purification of water and upgrading water quality (DAN 2004, 396: 136-141). In his books 'Introduction to Biochemical Ecology' and 'Introduction to Issues of Biochemical Ecology' he laid the groundwork and formulated basic principles for the new science of biochemical ecology at the interface between ecology and biochemistry. S.A.Ostroumov developed new methods for measuring the sublethal effects of xenobiotics, and quantitatively measuring their effects on the efficiency of removing suspended matter from water by filter-feeders; proposed the concepts of synecological cooperativity and ecological taxation in biological communities, a new approach to monetary assessment of the ecological services of aquatic ecosystems; applied the Liebig's law to human nutrition, which led to new links among biochemical ecology and human nutrition science and to new application of ecological science for strengthening human health; extended the scientific approaches of E. Schrödinger and I. Prigogine by applying them to aquatic ecosystems (Ecol. Stud. 2004, 7: 122-126; Sibirsky Ecological Journal. 2006. No. 3. P. 339-343), proposed a new method of recurrent additions to study phytoremediation. S.A.Ostroumov authored and co-authored over 300 publications including over15 books. He was an invited lecturer and visiting scientist in the USA, Germany, UK, Netherlands, and other countries. He developed several new lecture courses, published educational textbooks on general ecology, biochemical ecology, nature conservation and protection of biodiversity, water self-purification. He also published new programs and curricula on ecological mechanism of water self-purification, quantitative hydrobiology (aquatic ecology), environmental policy, ecology and ecophysiology of plants, and biochemical ecology. The paper presents the studies of the effects of some detergents on the filtering activity of marine bivalves Crassostrea gigas Thunberg and Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. The detergents Vesna-Delikat, IXI, and Tide-Lemon inhibited water filtering by bivalves, including filtering activity of both adult and juvenile organisms. The concentrations of the detergents producing that effect were relatively low. The different types of responses of phytoplankton and bivalves to some chemicals that co-occur in the water (under the conditions of complex water pollution, or pollution with a mix of chemicals) may produce consequences important to the state of the ecosystem. Because of the trophic chain organization, there is a hazard in the summation of the negative results of the effects of contaminants on the organisms of different trophic levels. The concrete examples of synergism were found when anthropogenic impacts affected organisms of two adjacent trophic levels. Bioeffects were described of the action of synthetic detergent Vesna (1 mg/l) on oysters Crassostrea gigas, detergent IXI (10 mg/l) on mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, detergent Tide-Lemon (50 mg/l) on M. galloprovincialis. The hazards of simultaneous influence of contamination of environment (e.g., by detergents) on organisms of two trophic levels may occur when the polluting chemicals produce effects on algae and bivalves that are filter-feeders. И.Вернадским.

    The effects of a xenobiotic (potassium bichromate K2Cr2O7) on the removal of suspended matter from water by mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis was studied. It was shown that the chemical inhibited the removal of suspended matter from water during water filtering by mussels. It was concluded that the chemical inhibited water filtration rate by mussels. The results are in accord with previous findings on effects of other xenobiotics and pollutants on filtration rate by bivalves. The similar inhibition by xenobiotics and pollutants was shown by the author for both marine (Ostroumov, DAN, 2001, vol.378, No.2, p.283-285) and freshwater (Ostroumov, DAN, 2001, vol. 380, No.5, p. 714-717) molluscs. The results demonstrate a new type of ecological hazard from water pollution when the polluting chemicals may uncouple the link between from the pelagial part of the ecosystem and its benthal part, i.e. pelagial-benthal coupling. Organisms are mediators of “biogenic migration of atoms in the biosphere”. This migration is partly implemented in the framework of pelagial–benthal coupling. Tables: the quantitative data for the average percentage of assimilated (16-90%) and non-assimilated (10-84%) food matter for 15 large taxa of invertebrates (Table 1); potassium bichromate inhibited water filtration by Mytilus galloprovincialis (Table 2); surfactants, detergents, pesticides inhibited filtration by filterfeeders, marine and freshwater bivalves and rotifers (Table 3). A prediction is made: "Further research and experimental studies are expected to provide new evidence that sublethal concentrations of chemical pollutants induce a significant decrease in the filtration capacity of freshwater and marine filter feeders" (p.129). "The uncoupling process considered above is an anthropogenic violation of the two basic laws (empirical rules or biogeochemical principles) of the biosphere functioning: (1) biogenic migration of atoms of chemical elements in the biosphere always tends toward its maximum expression; (2) on the geological time scale, the evolution of species gives rise to the forms of life that are stable in the biosphere, and is so directed that the biogenic migration of atoms in the biosphere increases" (p.129).

    This is a first paper to report toxic effect of a cationic surfactant on feeding rate of planktonic rotifers. Discovery of a new fact that detergents and surfactants (at a sublethal concentration) provide environmental hazard to the important group of important zooplankton organisms, namely rotifers. It is a first paper to report that a synthetic surfactant [exemplified by a cationic surfactant, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA)] inhibited feeding rate (filtration activity) of freshwater rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus). Doklady Biological Sciences. 2003; 390: 252-255. Effect of a cationic amphiphilic compound on rotifers. Ostroumov S.A., Walz N., Rusche R. (Moscow, Russia; Berlin, Germany); PMID: 12940156 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]; DETAILED ABSTRACT:
    ABSTRACT:
    Welfare of the biosphere depends on filter-feeders that contribute to making water clean and transparent. Important new facts on the hazard of man-made damage to the beneficial function of rotifers, which are the plankton filter-feeders, were discovered. For the first time, it was found that a chemical pollutant inhibits filtration activity of rotifers. As a chemical pollutant, a representative of synthetic surfactants was studied. The study featured an advanced technique that allows a precise measurement of the filtration rate on the basis of measuring the rate of removal of algal cells from water by rotifers. The experiment was run in the following system: the two-species culture of rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) and algae (Nannochloropsis limnetica; Eustigmatophyceae) was studied in a two-stage turbidostat (temperature 20 °C) as described by Walz et al. (1997) with some modifications. Dilution rate (the higher the filtration activity of rotifers, the higher the dilution rate) was measured in the turbidostat. As a model of a chemical pollutant, the cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA) was added to the water of the turbidostat. On the basis of previous studies (Ostroumov, 2000), the concentration of TDTMA was 0.5 mg/L. Dynamics of the dilution rate before and after addition of the chemical was monitored. The dilution rate decreased after the addition of TDTMA. Also, a comparison of the dilution rate in the experimental turbidostat (with the surfactant) with the control turbidostat (without the chemical) was made. Under conditions of the presence of TDTMA the dilution rate was lower than in the control turbidostat. The lower dilution rate means a lower filtration and grazing activity of the population of the rotifers. The results are in accord with the hypothesis that the cationic surfactant TDTMA can inhibit the filtering activity of populations of rotifers. The results support the conclusions of previous publications, in which analogous effects of surfactants on another major group of filter-feeders (the bottom-dwelling bivalve mollusks) were discovered (Doklady of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2001, 380, p. 847-849; 2002, vol. 382, p.138-141).     [The effects of a the xenobiotic (potassium bichromate K2Cr2O7) on the removal of suspended matter from water by the mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis was studied. It was shown that the chemical inhibited the removal of suspended matter from water during water filtering by mussels. It was concluded that the chemical inhibited water filtration rate by the mussels. The results are in accord with previous findings on effects of other xenobiotics and pollutants on filtration rate by bivalves. The similar inhibition by xenobiotics and pollutants was shown by the author for both marine (Ostroumov, DAN, 2001, vol. 378, No. 2., p. 283-285) and freshwater (Ostroumov, DAN, 2001, vol. 380, No. 5., p. 714-717) molluscs. The results demonstrate a new type of ecological hazard from water pollution when the polluting chemicals may uncouple the link between from the pelagial part of the ecosystem and its benthal part, i.e. pelagial-benthal coupling].      Responses of the freshwater bivalve Unio tumidus to mixed chemical preparations and the hazard of synecological summation of anthropogenic effects. - Doklady Biological Sciences, 2001, Volume 380, Numbers 1-6, p. 492-495. ISSN 0012-4966 (Print) 1608-3105 (Online). DOI 10.1023/A:1012344026176. The author introduced a new concept and term, “the synecological summation of the effects of anthropogenic factors on organisms”. In the new author’s experiments, the effects of commercial detergents, which are chemical mixtures, on bivalves (detergent OMO, freshwater mussels Unio tumidus) were studied. Detergents exert two types of hazardous effects on organisms and ecosystems: the phosphorus-induced stimulation of phytoplankton growth and surfactant-induced inhibition of filter-feeders. Because filter-feeders are an effective natural factor of control of unicellular plankton populations, the two types of the detergent-induced effects on ecosystem facilitate the growth of phytoplankton populations. Therefore, these effects sum together, thereby increasing the hazard of the man-made impact on the ecosystem. The results contribute to a better understanding of the potential ecological danger of pollutants for integral functions of ecosystems. It is the synecological summation of the effects of anthropogenic factors on plankton populations and filter-feeders that is of particular concern. The interaction between populations of plankton organisms and filter-feeders that feed on plankton should be taken into consideration in the studies on the ecological effects of synthetic detergents on these populations. Situations of man-made impact should be analyzed with using the synecological approach to the problem. http://sites.google.com/site/2001dbs380p492unio/; www.springerlink.com/index/L33309208H28L87R.pdf; DOI 10.1023/A:1012344026176;

  • New environmental hazards of surfactants to plankton, zooplankton https://www.researchgate.net/publication/200578650_ Ostroumov S. A., Walz N., Rusche R. Effect of a cationic amphiphilic compound on rotifers. - Doklady Biological Sciences. 2003 (May). Vol. 390. 252-255; [ISSN 0012-4966 (Print) 1608-3105 (Online)]. Welfare of the biosphere depends on filter-feeders that contribute to making water clean and transparent. Important new facts on the hazard of man-made damage to the beneficial function of rotifers, which are the plankton filter-feeders, were discovered. Paper was published, in which for the first time, it was found that a chemical pollutant inhibits filtration activity of rotifers. As a chemical pollutant, a representative of synthetic surfactants was studied. The study featured an advanced technique that allows precise measurement of the filtration rate on the basis of measuring the rate of removal of algal cells from water by rotifers. The experiment was run in the following system: the two-species culture of rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) feeding on the algal species (Nannochloropsis limnetica; Eustigmatophyceae) was studied in a two-stage turbidostat (temperature 20 °C) as described by Walz et al. (1997) with some modifications. Dilution rate (the higher the filtration activity of rotifers, the higher the dilution rate) was monitored in the turbidostat. As a model of a chemical pollutant, the cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA) was added to the water of the turbidostat. On the basis of previous studies (Ostroumov, 2000), the concentration of TDTMA was 0.5 mg/L. Dynamics of the dilution rate before and after addition of the chemical was monitored. The dilution rate decreased after the addition of TDTMA. Also, a comparison of the dilution rate in the experimental turbidostat (with the surfactant) with the control turbidostat (without the chemical) was made. Under conditions of the addition of TDTMA the dilution rate was lower than in the control turbidostat. The lower dilution rate means a lower filtration and grazing activity of the population of the rotifers. The results are in accord with the hypothesis that the cationic surfactant TDTMA can inhibit the filtering activity of populations of rotifers. The results support the conclusions of previous publications, in which analogous effects of surfactants on another major group of filter-feeders (the bottom-dwelling bivalve mollusks) were discovered (Doklady of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2001, 380, pp. 847-849; 2002, vol. 382, pp.138-141). www.springerlink.com/index/R3126462K122M13T.pdf; DOI10.1023/A:1024417903077;

    [Discovery of toxic effects of detergents on freshwater mussels, Unio tumidus]. Unio tumidus is the scientific Latin name of a common species of freshwater mussels which filter water. This paper is on the prestigious, honorable list titled 'Top papers, books on aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology' at the largest global library catalog, WorldCatalog; this paper was rated as 'Excellent' at this catalog. Bookmarked. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/10614386 ; Ostroumov S.A. Responses of Unio tumidus to mixed chemical preparations and the hazard of synecological summation of anthropogenic effects. - Doklady Biological Science (Dokl. Biol. Sci.), 2001, 380: 492-495.
    EXPLANATION OF TERMINOLOGY. Unio is a genus of medium-sized freshwater mussels, aquatic bivalve mollusks in the family Unionidae, the river mussels. Unio is the type genus of the family Unionidae.
    EXPLANATION OF SOME OF NEW FACTS DISCOVERED IN THIS ARTICLE: Freshwater mussel is a common species of mollusks in freshwaters (e.g., streams, rivers). These mollusks filter water. By doing so, they contribute to improving water quality (water self-purification). In this publication, the author reports his new experiments, which discovered toxicity of detergents to freshwater mussel. As a result, the filtration activity of the mollusk slows down, with bad and catastrophic consequenses to water quality.

It was shown that even some relatively mild influences on organisms of two adjacent trophic levels may eventually produce a synergistic, pronounced and definitely undesirable effect which will lead to an abnormal increase in the abundance of organisms of one of the trophic levels. The concrete examples of that type of synergism were found when anthropogenic impacts affected the organisms of two adjacent trophic levels (bivalves and algae). Some new bioeffects of the action of the synthetic detergent (exemplified by the laundry detergent, namely, the detergent 'Vesna') (1 mg/l) on the bivalves, oysters Crassostrea gigas were described. Also, some new effects of the detergent (exemplified by the laundry detergent, namely, the detegent 'IXI') (10 mg/l) on the marine mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, were found; also, new effects of the detergent (exemplified by the trade markTide-Lemon) (50 mg/l) on M. galloprovincialis were discovered. ** CONCLUSION: The hazard of simultaneous influence of contamination of environment (e.g., by detergents) on organisms of the two trophic levels may occur when the polluting chemicals produce effects on algae and bivalves that are filter-feeders. It means that a new type of environmental hazards was discovered.
