Simplicity8469 - Swing Bell Sleeve

Winter is just around the corner. I made two garments from Simplicity 8469 - I highly recommend it.

This orange red coat is by MILLY (right picture) and it's available at online shops. I had been hunting for a coat pattern with bell sleeves because I wanted to make one like that. I was really glad that I found Simplicity8469 first! I purchased it last month (I waited for a pattern sale) with plans to make it right away for the fall. The pattern has four length variations: optional tie belt, cap sleeve, or two bell long sleeve styles. I made a long vest with the cap sleeves and a coat with the bell long sleeves from the pattern.

First, I made the vest as a trial. I used a plaid wool from my stash. I cut view c with the length of view a. I cut my normal size 8.

The finished vest fits me perfectly. It only took 9 hours to make. I omitted a lining and buttons because I wanted to wear it loosely. It can be worn without the tie belt. I didn't change the locations of the tie loop (I usually raise waistline). I added the length of the tie belt by one inch.

Next, I used wool-blends tweed, and it sparkles a little by adding a metallic yarn. I cut 10 (It's one size bigger than the vest version) because I added a lining and used thicker fabric. I usually shorten the sleeve length but I didn't this time. If you are taller than me (I am 5' 4"), you should check the sleeve length. Adding a lining was a little bit confusing with the instructions, so I almost didn't follow them. I raised the locations of the tie loop by 3/4 inches. I've had this silk scarf sitting in my closet for a long time so I used it as a lining for the sleeves.

I only made the top of the button hole and sewed the wrapped button. I sewed snap buttons on the front closer flap too. However, I left the bottommost button open so that it will be easier to walk around. I chose black snap buttons in order to not draw too much attention. I will wear it till the end of autumn.

The pattern is perfect for the autumn season and has many possibilities. I will definitely be making other options. I really LOVE the shape and style.
