Against normalization and repression: Struggle and organize!
We learnt that on October 25th, a large police operation called Erebus (rebo in
Portuguese, i.e. the name of the Greek god of darkness) was launched against the
anti-authoritarian movement. ---- The civil police invaded at least 4 libertarian premises
and claims to have warrants against a dozen of premises and about 30 people. They raided
the occupation Pandorga and the Parrhesia premises as well as the political and cultural
space Ateneu Libertrio Batalha da Vrzea that used to be FAG's official premises. The
Federao Anarquista Gacha (FAG) is specifically targeted by this operation as it is
considered by the stupid-as-usual police to be the top organization of the anarchist
movement in Porto Alegre. They are accused of forming a gang in order to commit crimes
against public and private possessions.
[Franais] https://anarkismo.net/article/30650
Read also (in Portuguese): - OPINIO DA CAB https://www.anarkismo.net/article/30643
It has to be known that such an operation isn't the first one. Actually, it is the 4th
time in less than 10 years that FAG is targeted by the police and the State in Rio Grande
do Sul (RS, Brazil). In October 2009, while FAG is campaining about the police crime of
Elton Brum, several plain-clothes cops raided the building without warrant and declared
they found... anarchist literature! In 2013, the police invaded twice, in June and in
October, the Ateneu Libertrio Batalha da Vrzea to seize or break computers, furnitures
and documents. At that period, other premises of the social and political left and
individual houses were also raided as part of the Bloco de Luta.
Nowadays, this operation happens as the State of Rio Grande do Sul and the municipality of
Porto Alegre are facing heavy and determined struggles from both education and
municipality workers. In the meanwhile, Temer's government is stuck deep into cases of
corruption. The FAG takes part in the current struggles in Porto Alegre as a group of
activists and as workers with their libertarian ideas and practices.
The police operation rebo aims to criminalize social movements and in particular the FAG
and the social anarchist ideology it defends. It aims to disable the struggles and the
unions who use direct action to defend their living conditions against austerity measures
and the capitalist system, against colonialism, racism and patriarchy.
But one can't erase ideas that have been the living heart of the workers' movement for
decades, one can't erase the revolt for freedom, class independance, direct democracy and
popular power!
Hands off social fighters!
Solidarity with the Federao Anarquista Gacha (FAG), the Coordenao Anarquista
Brasileira (CAB) and the anarchist movement in Porto Alegre and in Brazil!

On Friday 3 November the owner and manager of one of the apartments in Jezyce tried to
illegally evict the family with three children. In their absence, he broke into the
apartment and carried out all the things. The current was also cut off. He did this
despite the current lease agreement. An excuse to throw away tenants for a pavement was a
ten-day delay in rent payment for October, which - as the tenants explained - was also due
to the fact that the owner did not timely send relevant billing documents. In addition,
when they signed a lease, they paid a deposit. The law on the protection of tenants'
rights ... clearly shows that the owner has no right to do so. ---- Late in the afternoon,
the tenants of the Wielkopolska Tenants' Association had broken out their doors and
returned their belongings. At the scene of the incident came the police and ambulance to
the tenant, who felt bad. Late at night WSL activists had to take one of the children to a
hospital where he was assisted. The owner taking things to the tenants also took medicines
that the child should systematically take. That same night, the police went to the owner,
and he promised that he would immediately return all the belongings to the tenants.
The next morning the owner, although he appeared in the townhouse, still refused to issue
things. Finally, as a result of the police intervention, the items returned from the
apartment were returned by the owner. It turned out that the day before was taken to the
abandoned apartment floor above, although the owner claimed that he had taken them to a
special magazine.
WSL will provide legal assistance to tenants who will then be represented by a lawyer. The
owner of the apartment must count on a number of allegations not only of infringement of
the Tenants' Rights Protection Act, but also the violation of the Code of Conduct,
violation of possession and the threat of loss of health.

** We support the announced mobilizations of marketers, workers, the unemployed and youth
against the abolition of the Sunday holiday. ---- Seven years after the outbreak of the
global financial crisis and five after its emergence in Greece, the conditions of total
impoverishment and exploitation brought about by memoranda and loan contracts with
international creditors continue to rise for the overwhelming majority of society. The
unhindered looting of social goods and acquisitions is intensifying. The escalation of
unemployment, permanent wage cuts and pensions, the further deterioration of the health
and education system, the criminalization of trade unionism, the easing of labor
relations, the imposition of new taxes, the privatization of ports (but also entire
auctions), the auctions of the first residence, the pillage of nature to maximize capital
gains and the repression of those who struggle are some of the key elements of the ongoing
class attack, and it is now obvious that unless it is repelled immediately, it will pull
everything into its destructive path. Within this treaty, millions of people live below
the poverty line, do not have the basic goods for survival (such as shelter, food, heating
and electricity), while some, immersed in despair and despair as a result of misery, are
driven up to suicide.
SYRIZA, as it was expected, continues with the same antisocial policies as its
predecessors. He continues the relentless attack against the bottom of this society,
imposing ever more onerous conditions of exploitation. The forefront of this growing
attack is the restructuring of labor relations, since through this restructuring the
bosses will be able to maximize their profits. Thus, in the workplace, the state and the
bosses are making rigid exploitation of the proletarians with the gains of class struggles
being constantly leveled. Wages and wages of hunger, layoffs, wage and pension cuts (even
higher), employers' terrorism and the constant blackmailing of unemployment (if one claims
something)
Part of the restructuring of labor relations and the endeavor to impose a modern working
age are the abolition of Sunday's holiday. The attempt to abolish the Sunday holiday began
in 2014 with a law that provided for the operation of the shops 7 Sundays a year.
Nowadays, SYRIZA-ANEL's "far-right" co-operation with a ministerial decision increases the
number of Sundays that shops will operate at 52. The Sunday holiday together with a
plethora of issues (such as the Memorandum, Migration-refugee issue, mining in ruins) was
a "red line" and a pre-election slogan for SYRIZA; a slogan erased by the minds of
government officials overnight. This government move is not accidental, just like any
other government move.
From the abolition of Sunday holidays to wood in strikes and layoffs; the drowning of
thousands of migrant refugees in the Mediterranean and the deaths of others on the fences
of the European border to the pogroms of the government in Eidomena; the memorandums and
the debts to the repression of those who resist; from the wars in Syria and Palestine to
the bombings in Turkey and France; it is now obvious that barbarism is the norm and not
the exception As capitalist Treaty. The above demonstrates the face of capitalism that is
blood-thirsty and ruthless. Let all those who try to make a man look at it.
Against the violent devaluation of our lives, all of us below, the workers, the
unemployed, the youth, the locals and the immigrants, knowing our real needs, must take
life in our hands, organize and fight, collectively, self-organized and uninvolved, in
every social and workplace, in schools and faculties, in workplaces, neighborhoods and
streets, away from any party and syndicalist manipulation that inevitably leads to the
weakening and degeneration of class and class movement.

The Worker Solidarity Movement extends its solidarity to all workers at Irish Rail. A
series of one-day stoppages and pickets to secure pay rises are planned over the months of
November and December. The sought-after pay increases (3.75 per cent annually) are in line
with pay increases secured by other transport workers in Dublin Bus, Luas, and Bus
ireann, all of whom secured these victories following collective industrial action and
numerous strikes. ---- The workers at Irish Rail have not received a pay rise since 2008.
Instead, they have seen their workloads increase and retiring staff not being replaced.
Dermot O'Leary, NBRU general secretary, points out that passenger numbers and revenue at
Irish Rail are now on a par with Celtic Tiger levels but workers' pay and conditions have
not similarly improved.
The bosses at Irish Rail repeat the standard line that the company has no money, arguing
that increasing employee compensation will drive it into insolvency. Conversely, SIPTU and
the NBRU claim that the National Transport Authority (NTA) is directing the profits
currently being generated at Irish Rail into increased consultancy and external employment
in managerial roles. Over the coming weeks, if the strikes go ahead, we can look forward
to a deeply unimaginative and lazy regime media trotting out the usual line about traffic
chaos and commuters being inconvenienced. We should remember that the same media remain
silent as we have to endure an inadequate and underfunded transport network every other
day of the week.
Public transport in Ireland is chronically underfunded. The state does not invest in
public transport to anywhere near the same level as other European Union states.
Similarly, Dublin has a rock-bottom level of public subsidy to transport when compared
with other European capitals[1]. From 2008 to 2014, the chronic became acute as successive
Fianna Fil/Green and Fine Gael/Labour governments cut some 10.6 billion from spending on
public transport. As the state subvention has fallen, transport companies have increased
fares and sought to minimise employee compensation (wages, PRSI, pensions).
Restore the subvention to public transport and it's possible not only to improve pay and
conditions for workers but lower ticket costs for commuters and improve services
generally. (Some 30-40% of workers' pay increases go right back to the government in
increased income taxes anyway). It seems straightforward so why isn't this happening?
The transport strikes of recent years take place within a wider political battle going on
over the future direction of the EU's and Ireland's political economy. Simply stated, the
approach to resolving the crisis of capitalism of 2008 has been to socialise the costs of
the financial crisis, to reduce public expenditure on public services, and to push for new
routes for capital accumulation. In Ireland, this approach underpins the confidence and
supply agreement between Fine Gael and Fianna Fil which is premised on meeting in full
the domestic and EU fiscal rules'. The EU's fiscal rules curtail increasing public
subventions while also encouraging competitive tendering of public services, including
transport. The EU's parties and policymakers of the right continue to advocate privatising
public transport, notwithstanding much evidence, experience, and common-sense to suggest
that public sector provision is as good if not better. In fact, a growing number of cities
across Europe have mobilised to take back into city or public ownership formerly
privatised transport networks.
There is a real battle going on here over what kind of society we want to live in. Do you
want to live in a society where corporations and shareholders effectively dictate to us
what kind of workplaces and public services we will have? If you do, then accept the
regime's sound-bites and join a race to the bottom for all workers. If you don't, then
support the resistance.
Don't cross picket lines!

privatisation h/t Andrew Flood

media coverage of transport strikes here, and the connection with environmental struggles

It starred in one of the great struggles of the workers in the history of Catalonia, the
so-called 'Strike of the Canadian'. ---- PUBLIC MEMORY ---- This Wednesday (01/11) marks
the 107th anniversary of the creation of the National Confederation of Labor. At the
second congress of the Catalan trade union Solidaridad Obrera , meeting in Barcelona, it
was decided to create an alternative to the UGT at the state level. The new union had its
first illegality in the year after its birth, which did not prevent it from continuing to
grow and by the end of 1919 had some 700,000 members. ---- That year, the CNT spearheaded
one of the great struggles of workers in Catalonia's history, the so-called 'Canadian
Strike' . This strike was triggered by the resignation of several workers of the
electrical company Riegos and Ebro forces, but it became a general strike that paralyzed
two thirds of Catalan industry and led Spain to be the first country in the world where
the labor movement reached the day of eight hours by law.
During the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera , the CNT was severely repressed, but managed
to maintain a good part of its force. The CNT's relationship with the Second Republic was
also not quiet, as evidenced by the bloody incidents of the strike at the National
Telephone Company of Spain, which caused 20 deaths in Seville , the insurrectional
movement in Alto Llobregat or the so-called " Events of Casas Viejas " .
When part of the army and the right give the coup d'etat in July of 1936, the CNT faces
fascism and plays a very important role in the failure of the insurrectionists in several
cities. The CNT was the most powerful political organization in some territories and this
has caused it to take charge of the situation in many municipalities, initiating a
revolutionary process in organizing columns that will march to the front. Without the
strength of the CNT, it would be very difficult to imagine that the Second Republic had
endured the onslaught of the Italian and German insurgents and allies for so long.
With the victory of the insurgents, the CNT was banned, its assets confiscated and its
militants persecuted. After 38 years of darkness, the CNT presented its statutes on May
7, 1977 .

Cleaners have a vital role in society, yet their job is poorly paid and routinely
dismissed as a job carried out mainly by women to earn a bit of extra cash; cleaning is
not generally seen as a particularly physically hard or dangerous job, many people see it
as involving a bit of dusting, mopping and hoovering. ---- Written by a cleaner, Solfed's
latest pamphlet draws on research from across the world to show the reality of cleaning
and the impact the job has on the health and wellbeing of cleaners. The pamphlet not only
examines the more obvious aspects of the job that affect cleaners' health, such as the
physical demands of the job and the effects of cleaning chemicals, but also takes into
account the detrimental impact of factors such as low pay, ever-increasing workloads, low
status, sexual harassment and family commitments on the everyday lives of cleaners. In
doing so, the pamphlet exposes the true cost being paid by cleaners and their families for
job that is central to the wellbeing of society as a whole.
As such, this pamphlet is not only essential reading for cleaners but for all those
interested in seeing greater justice for one of the most exploited and marginalised groups
of workers.
Copies of the pamphlet will be available from the London Anarchist Bookfair on 28 Oct, or
from your nearest Solfed Local.
