| Dear friends, On 1st October 2017 people living in Catalonia, Spain, went to vote in their referendum to become an independent nation. However, many were prevented from voting by Spanish police, who fired rubber bullets at members of the public who were trying to vote, and attacked innocent citizens with batons. Elderly women were left bleeding from head wounds. The police even clashed with Catalonia's fire brigade who were trying to protect the Catalan people from the Spanish police. Sign Fabio's petition urging the Spanish Prime Minister to allow Catalonians their referendum. Whatever the reasons for Catalonians wanting independence, the actions of the Spanish government are a clear attack on democracy and civil rights. Violence and force by the police should never be used against members of the public who pose no threat to anybody. Spain's Prime Minister claimed the actions were appropriate because he did not believe the referendum was legal, based on his interpretation of Spain's constitution. But, if the Spanish constitution prevents its citizens from any possibility of even voicing their desires to become an independent nation through a referendum, then there is a problem with the Spanish constitution. Thank you. | |
