Regional Commercial Manager - Africa
The role
Commercial management practices are common across the Business Area (for customers and distributors) with the goal to develop mutually profitable relationships with customers by both minimizing business risk and maximizing overall profitability.
Key performance areas
  • Determine how to best engage with new business to minimize the commercial risk and maximize overall profitability;
  • Develop and maintain standard SMRT quotation / proposal / contract templates to drive consistent customer experience and mitigate commercial and legal risk;
  • Responsible for supporting Local Framework Agreement implementation;
  • Act as Approver for any commercial deviations within new quotations, working cross-functionally as required to ensure compliance with other parts of the business such as Sandvik Credit;
  • Formal management of the business risk assessment of contracts (new and amended) prior to business commitment, for sales areas and distributor network within the region;
  • Assess risks and viability of the long term profitability of proposed deals – query logic, ensure business cases are comprehensive and an accurate reflection of projected invoicing and COGS levels – this includes any bundled (more than one Product Line or sub-Product Area) deals, which require unbiased assessment of overall risk/benefits to Sandvik Mining;
  • Ensure all relevant P&L global stakeholders have been included in the review process for new business - mediate / coordinate communications where required;
  • Support the Sales Areas to ensure faster approval timelines and smoother submission process through coaching;
  • Participate as required in Customer Negotiations within your region as needed based on scale / complexity of the deal;
  • Train and embed new commercial management tools, systems, and processes as part of any global rollout;
  • Lead regional training on commercial excellence – benchmark practices, Sandvik ways of working;
  • Participate in forensic process auditing of regional adherence to internal policies and procedures, prepare gap assessments and recommended gap closures – audits will be within your region but you may be required to lead or support cross-functional audits in other regions, from time to time;
  • Investigate and log any process deviations within the region – recommend next steps to drive accountability and continuous improvement;
  • Work with the central Commercial Management team in the ongoing development of commercial management process improvements, process mapping, audit tools, and user guidelines.

Your profile
  • University Degree, preference to Legal or Business degree(s).
  • 10+ years of experience working with contractual documents and managing commercial issues;
  • 5+ years of Mining experience
  • Demonstrated ability in assessing commercial risk as part of undertaking new business, leading negotiation strategy development and participating in negotiations;
  • Extensive experience in contract development (5+ years) and a deep understanding of legal terms and conditions, and moderate to strong comprehension of financial reporting and business case assessment;
  • Experience in development and execution of process audits, and in the development of new processes/policies/procedures;
  • Additionally must have excellent interpersonal skills, are able to build trust and establish respectful working relationships with difficult stakeholders at all levels, by clearly communicating verbally and in writing, appropriately debating difficult issues and by being a quick thinker
  • Team development skills, strong computer skills including advanced experience with Excel and PowerPoint, and superior presentation skills (both physical and electronic).
  • Willing and able to lead across differing geographies and cultures;
  • Able to manage time effectively, prioritize without micro-management, and be fluent in English at minimum.
  • Will be required to travel within assigned region
