DISCIPLESHIP MEANS MISSION
The plan of God is to save people through other people like themselves; and also to govern people through other people, like themselves. God Himself sent His Beloved Son, born of a woman, the Son of man, made like us in all things except sin. Jesus was born poor, worked as a carpenter, and went to John for baptism, as though He were a sinner. But fore-seeing His early death, He trained some people to carry on His work for the salvation of other people. Closest to Himself was Peter. “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?”Then, there were James and John, whom He took along with Peter, to witness His transfiguration, and later, His agony in the garden. Then, there were the other apostles. Finally, we read today of the seventy two disciples. A series of instructions precede the sending so that the ‘appointed’ have a clear ‘action plan’ about the nature of their mission and its execution.
Pope Gregory the Great comments quite appropriately, that the two-fold commandment of love, should shine in the messengers of the gospel. Their love for one another would be the most powerful message. We, being the members of the Church are appointed, consecrated and sent out to be the heralds of the Good News. Hence membership in the Church means preaching Jesus Christ, making him present, thus honouring him who is present where the Gospel is preached, believed and confessed, defended and suffered.
Let us not forget our appointment and consecration. The ship is safe at the harbor, but that is not the purpose for which it is built. Let us leave the harbor and move forward, taking Jesus with us, especially to those who do not know him and to those who need him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, make us your true messengers. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
