Dear friends, The local government in Banana Shire, Queensland, on the northeast tip of Australia, just announced a horrifying new plan: they're going to pay a bounty to anyone who successfully kills a stray or "community" cat. And they're going to pay $10 for the scalp of an adult cat and $5 for the scalp of a kitten. Australia has a long history of killing community cats. Their former Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, announced a plan in 2015 to kill 2 million community cats by 2020. The government funding for this plan went towards baiting, shooting and poisoning the community cats. And now, Banana Shire is taking it one step further. This plan is so grotesquely cruel, it's hard to believe anyone could support it in this day and age. Not only is this plan deadly for stray animals, but it is also dangerous for pet cats, too. There is no way to prevent a bounty hunter from killing a companion animal by mistake and turning its scalp in to claim their reward. That is why it is so important for you to act today. The Australian government needs to know that their bounty plan is cruel and ineffective. This plan directly facilitates animal cruelty by encouraging private citizens to go out and shoot innocent animals. Thank you for all that you do, | | Miranda B. The Care2 Petitions Team |
