Human Rights Have No Borders Dear friends, Turkey is in a downward human rights spiral — jailing peaceful activists indiscriminately and cracking down on human rights freedoms. Earlier this summer, Turkish authorities detained the director of Amnesty Turkey, Idil Eser, and nine other human rights defenders. All ten are suspected of ‘committing a crime in the name of a terrorist organization without being a member.’ The accusations are baseless and ridiculous. But still, eight of these human rights defenders have been imprisoned and are pending trial. Two have been released on bail; however, they are still facing charges. Your support will help expand our grassroots outreach to mobilize more voices to demand their release and it will help us increase the number of meetings with government officials to help advocate for justice. Further, your support will fund a large scale communications campaign to keep this case front and center in the media. With a shortening news cycle, keeping the world’s attention on this issue will be challenging unless we have financial support from supporters like you. Please make an urgent donation and it will go twice as far. These arrests are just two examples of the deteriorating human rights situation in Turkey. Following the failed coup attempt last year, over 50,000 people have been arrested and at least 156 media outlets have been closed down, along with at least 130 journalists who have been detained. We must stand up for those that tirelessly stand up for others. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Margaret Huang EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL USA |
