Human Rights
Have No Borders
Dear friends,
President Trump has abandoned our country’s commitment to human rights. This is not hyperbole.
Trump embraces leaders whose policies and actions are antithetical to human rights.
  1. He has expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  2. He welcomed to the White House Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, a leader who has locked up tens of thousands of his political opponents and decimated the human-rights community in Egypt.
  3. He reached out to Rodrigo Duterte, the leader of the Philippines, who has invoked the Holocaust as a model for how he would like to dispose of drug dealers and addicts.
  4. Further, in May, Turkey's President Tayyip Erdoğan visited the White House, a trip that was marred by an attack on peaceful demonstrators outside the Turkish Embassy by his security agents.
Trump’s warmth towards oppressive regimes will only embolden them. Amnesty is working to ensure that President Trump’s views on human rights do not become the “new normal.” Be part of our resistance efforts. This month is our annual Membership Drive. Donate and your gift will be doubled to help take on Trump’s human rights record.
Not using the presidential bully pulpit to call foreign governments to account is an abdication of moral responsibility.
That’s why supporting Amnesty now is more important than ever. We expose oppressive governments and we mobilize our supporters to call global attention to their wrongdoings.
In addition to his embrace of leaders who abuse human rights, President Trump continues to undermine human rights at home.
We are fighting his ban on travelers from six Muslim-majority countries and refugees from anywhere in the world, and we are challenging his cruel agenda to deter, punish, and criminalize people seeking asylum here, including locking up thousands of families in immigration detention centers.
Sincerely,
Margaret Huang
