Nikon: Where are the women?

Nikon should try harder to find women photographers.

Dear friends,
I can guarantee you there are thousands upon thousands of excellent photographers who are women. Unfortunately, Nikon couldn't be bothered to fine even one to be part of their new ad campaign.
Representation matters. When girls look in research labs, corporate executive offices, and, yes, ad campaigns, and don't see one woman, it sends the wrong message. It becomes that much harder to imagine yourself chasing after and achieving your dreams. Thanks to ad campaigns like Nikon's, it's no wonder that, even with decades of progress under our belt, there are still vastly fewer women photographers publicly lauded than their male counterparts.
Nikon claims that they tried to include women, but that none they contacted were available to participate in their campaign. But even they admit they didn't actually try hard. The company says that it did "not put enough focus in this area." That's not surprising from a company where just one in 10 employees are women.
The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. But that doesn't actually make anything right. We don't need apologies, we need action. Nikon should start by adding 32 female photographers to their promotional campaign.
Thank you,
 Emily V.
