Albanian side of Lake Ohrid, probably part of UNESCO in 2019

The Albanian side of Lake Ohrid will be part of UNESCO in 2019. The Experts from the Albanian Ministry of Tourism and Environment and Ministry of Culture are finalizing the Nomination File.

This was the message from Press Conference held at the end of The Sixth Transboundary Meeting of the project “Towards strengthened governance of the shared Transboundary natural and cultural heritage of the Lake Ohrid region” which took place on 14- 15 September, in Pogradec Albania.
This sixth meeting was part of a joint European Union and UNESCO initiative, in close cooperation with the Albanian and Macedonian authorities, to strengthen transboundary cooperation for the management of the Lake Ohrid region’s natural and cultural heritage.

After the meeting, there was a press conference to inform the public about the work that has been done and the further steps for protecting and managing the transboundary Lake Ohrid, which is shared between Albania and FYR of Macedonia.

Project officer Alexandra Fiebig said that  inscribing the remain part of lake Ohrid in UNESCO, will strengthen the protection and integrity of this heritage.
She explained for the Albanian Media that the Nomination File should be handed over on February 2018 and then UNESCO needs one year and a half to evaluate the file, to send monitoring groups in the region to see how the facts are presented in the file and decide by 2019 if the Albanian Part of Lake Ohrid will be part of UNESCO or not.
Mrs Fiebig said that this project is unique for the South East Europe, since it is the first project to join two parts of a transboundary heritage.
The representative of Ministry of Culture, Mrs Sonila Kora says that the project is in its final steps, where three local experts, two from Ministry of Tourism and Environment and one from Ministry of Culture are doing the final work to complete the file.
