Spain: Treat Refugees with Humanity
|
Dear friends, Will you join me in a quick thought exercise? You're huddled by the door of your home, anxiously awaiting the right moment to escape before your neighborhood is blown to pieces. Your country is war-torn and your only way out is to flee by boat to another continent. You've been told that it'll be a better life, but you quickly learn that won't be the case. Instead of being welcomed with open arms, you're locked up in a dark cell at a police station without knowing what will happen next. A recent Human Rights Watch report reveals that immigrants to Spain "are held for days in dark, dank cells in police stations and almost certainly will then automatically be placed in longer-term immigration detention facilities pending deportation that may never happen." The world is facing a refugee crisis right now, but governments are not stepping up to the plate. Asylum seekers must be provided with decent housing and help with trials and asylum applications. It's heartbreaking to learn the truth of what's happening to these war survivors in Spain, but we have a chance to make our voices heard with this petition. Officials must know that the world is watching and expecting Spain to treat refugees with humanity. Please sign to send a message to the Spanish Ministry of Home Affairs for better refugee treatment. Thank you,
