Malta: End Horse Carriage Rides! | | | Sign Now |

| Dear friends, While on holiday in Malta this year, Care2 member Helen was hoping to take in the sights. But she quickly noticed something alarming. Many other tourists were hiring popular "Karozzin" horse-drawn carriages to take rides around the city — and while it might sound idyllic to some people, Helen quickly discovered that it was not. One day, during 40 degree Celsius weather, Helen was horrified when she saw a horse stop in the middle of the street, carriage still attached to its back. The animal was panting so hard that its chest looked like a bellows. It stood with its feet spread, head down and drooling, and body shaking violently all over. Helen was so disturbed by what she witnessed that she couldn't shake the incident from her mind. She googled the horse's symptoms and discovered the animal had been suffering from heat exhaustion, which is ultimately fatal for horses. She also noticed the horse had been working in heavy traffic, breathing in carbon monoxide and surrounded by the chaotic din of honking horns. Thank you for all that you do, | | Miranda B.
