Dear friends,
The elephants of Laos are under attack on all fronts. From poachers to deforestation, their numbers have dwindled year after year. And now the uncontrolled trade of Laotian elephants sent north to China has threatened their numbers even further.
Once in China the animals are sent to zoos, wild animal parks and even circuses where they are forced to contort, do tricks and are treated as props for tourists who pay good money to see the animals suffer.
The situation is dire. The country, known as "Land of a Million Elephants," now has less than 1000 — with around a hundred having been sold into captivity over the past few years. Conservationist say once the number drops below 200 the animal will be functionally extinct in the wild.
The Laos government must respect its national laws and international treaties and put an end to the live elephant trade that is threatening the very survival of their pachyderm population. Without action, the "Land of a Million Elephants" could soon be the "Land of None."
Thank you for making a difference,
Andrew M.
