Most of the old house will then be redone. For what purpose ? Is this the wifely unspoken plan to retire in place ? Or is it possibly an alternative plan to possibly be able to sell the house at some point---you know the old Real Estate Agents BS line, updated bath and kitchen, move in ready.
And move off to some semi tropical beach paradise which rhymes with girdle. I think not considering my wife's aversion to temps over 80 and her complaints about humidity of the bathroom post shower.
The sad fact is that there is no such thing as move in ready when you deal with an old house.
My sister expressed a theory that says buy a new house , live in it for 20 years and then move and when you move , move to another new house.
Solid approach.
The theory is based on the idea that you can get out before all the bad stuff happens.
With an old house, there is always something happening.
Today the back bath gets tiled, the electrician showed up at the same time as the tile guys, I took the dog and left to drop him at doggy daycare, 3 big guys and a nosey dog in a small bathroom is too much. Of course, my wife was late getting out the door, which forced me into a fast shower and a rushed getting dressed lest the tradesmen be treated to me au naturel.
I think I have renovation burnout, but I will dispense with it over the weekend as I get to sit at the kitchen table and read the paper with the sun drenching through the new windows , bouncing off freshly painted walls. The end does for once justify the means.
