Crisis in Venezuela

Take Action!
Dear friends,

Last week we wrote to you about the current human rights situation in Venezuela. I’m sorry to write today with the urgent news that the situation on the ground is rapidly deteriorating. Since last week, we learned that other activists in Venezuela have been detained, simply for speaking out against the government.

Will you take action immediately to call for their release?

Just a few days ago, in the middle of the night, two prominent activists were grabbed from their homes and forcibly loaded into an unmarked car. We know this because videos documenting their capture surfaced on Tuesday morning. Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience Leopoldo Lopez and Mayor of Caracas Antonio Ledezma were taken away in the middle of the night, without arrest warrants. Despite rumors they are kept in a military facility, their families have not been officially informed where they are being held.

For the past few years, Amnesty has documented that the Venezuelan government is silencing people by force, and now it’s getting worse.

“The Maduro administration is sending a terrifying message to all people in Venezuela: dissent will not be tolerated in any form,” said Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas Director at Amnesty International.

Stand in solidarity with the Venezuelans illegally detained. Join Amnesty International and send an immediate and urgent message to Venezuelan authorities: Don’t silence dissent by force.

Thank you for taking action,

Margaret Huang
