The protests in the Rif, of which we have already reported¹, continued, with the convening
of a general strike. At the moment, the only response given by the Moroccan regime to
popular demands was repression, which left at least one dead and about 200 Berber
political prisoners. At the same time, several Sahrawi activists, detained during the
dismantling of Gdeim Izik Camp in 2010, were sentenced to severe penalties, including
several life sentences. ---- According to colleagues from CNT Córdoba, on July 20 last the
region of Alhucemas was again paralyzed by another general strike called by the Popular
Movement of the Rif. The main demand for the strike is the withdrawal of the army
occupying the Rif (25,000 troops) and the immediate release of political prisoners. The
Movement calls for schools, hospitals, a university, respect for Rif culture and an end to
extreme poverty, the fight against corruption and for democratic freedoms.
Solidarity with the Rif spread throughout Morocco with demonstrations by tens of thousands
of people in places like Rabat, while in Ayoun, in the occupied Sahara, there have
recently been great protests for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people. Before all
this, the state of Morocco reacts with the blockade of information and violence.
Around 200 Berber political prisoners have been added since July 24 to eight journalists

simple fact of exercising their work decently and reporting freely on the strike and

The Rif People's Movement is a movement of assemblies confronting the Moroccan state in
