We lost Liu Xiaobo but we won’t stop fighting for Liu Xia. | ||||||
Dear friends, Last week, we lost a beloved human rights defender. Liu Xiaobo was the only Nobel Peace Laureate in the world living in detention. He had peacefully stood up for human rights in China until he was diagnosed with liver cancer and denied the treatment abroad that he badly needed. Sadly, on July 13, Liu Xiaobo lost his battle and died under police custody. We lost the fight to free Liu Xiaobo but we won’t stop until his wife, Liu Xia, is released. Take action now. Liu Xia has been held under illegal house arrest since October 2010. During the past seven years, she has had almost no contact with family, friends, or her even her husband. Liu Xia, who is an artist, poet, and human rights defender herself, has never received any explanation of the reasons for her detention. Urge President Xi to release Liu Xia from house arrest immediately. “I hope that I will be the last victim in China's long record of treating words as crimes,” wrote Liu Xiaobo in 2009. We cannot let Liu Xia meet the same fate as her husband. She has been diagnosed with severe psychological illness stemming from depression and anxiety. She has not been able to consistently receive proper medical attention for her condition, and in 2014, she suffered a heart attack. We cannot let Liu Xia spend another second under house arrest. With Liu Xiaobo’s passing, China knows that the world is watching. Together we can shine a light on Liu Xia and set her free. Take action to free Liu Xia now. Thank you for taking action.
