Dear friends,
Earlier this week I emailed you asking for your help in pressuring Turkey to release the director of Amnesty Turkey, Idil Eser, and 9 other human rights defenders that had been detained by the Turkish government without charges. Since then Idil and five of the other human rights defenders have been accused of “committing a crime in the name of a terrorist organization”. Despite the fact that this accusation is ridiculous and baseless, these six human rights defenders have now been imprisoned pending trial. Please donate now, and help us demand their release.
Sincerely,
Margaret Huang

Urgent: Turkey jails Amnesty Director and Board Chair
Dear friends, This is unprecedented. Turkish authorities have arrested the director of Amnesty Turkey İdil Eser and Amnesty Turkey’s board chair Taner Kılıç. For the first time in Amnesty’s history, a director and board chair in the same country are being held behind bars. We must mobilize and pressure authorities in Turkey to release them immediately. Make an urgent donation to show your support. During a raid on a human rights workshop İdil was attending, Turkish authorities detained her along with seven other human rights activists and two trainers. This occurred just weeks after authorities arrested Taner Kılıç. They must be released. Please donate and help us mobilize grassroots pressure from countries around the world. Your support will help expand our grassroots outreach to mobilize more voices to demand their release and it will help us increase the number of meetings with government officials to help advocate for justice. These arrests are just two examples of the deteriorating human rights situation in Turkey. Following the failed coup attempt last year, over 47,000 people have been arrested and at least 156 media outlets have been closed down, along with 120 journalists who have been detained. These attacks on human rights cannot go unnoticed and we must stand up for those that tirelessly stand up for others. Donate now. Thank you for your support, Margaret Huang, Executive Director Amnesty International USA
