Dear friends, Evelyn Beatriz Hernandez Cruz is 19 years old. She's from a small rural community in Cuscatlán, eastern El Salvador. And she's just been sentenced to 30 years in prison for giving birth to a stillborn baby. Evelyn's mistreatment deeply disturbed Care2 member LK. When Evelyn was 18, she was forced into a sexual relationship with a gang member who raped her repeatedly. She was still in high school when she discovered she was pregnant. In her third trimester, she became severely ill with acute back and stomach pain. That's when she suffered a miscarriage, giving birth to a stillborn child in the bathroom. Now the authorities are insisting that, because Evelyn did not seek antenatal care, she's guilty of murder. The judge who heard her case has even suggested that Evelyn's mother may also be criminally responsible. All of this is outrageous. But the facts are clear: Evelyn is a teenage girl. She was raped. She had a miscarriage. And now she's behind bars — and could be there until she's 49 years old. Don't let them take away this young woman's life after she's already been so horribly abused.
