US doctor and anarchist Robert Grodt (Demhat Goldman), who fought in the ranks of the
People's Protection Units (YPG), died on July 6 during a battle against the Islamic State
(EI) group in Raqqa , In Syria, the YPG said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.
---- In a video, Grodt, 28, of California, said he decided to join the YPG last March "to
help the Kurdish people in their struggle for autonomy in Syria and elsewhere, and to help
create a more secure environment ". ---- Elizabeth Clarke, a relative of Grodt, said on
Facebook that he had "unexpectedly died in Syria." ---- "He was there helping oppressed
people, his passion for life," she wrote. "I will always remember Rob for his commitment
to his ideals. He and Kaylee taught me to chain myself to the other person in the protests
of the days of Occupy Wall Street and I will never forget the correct pronunciation in

Grodt was in the headlines during the Occupy Wall Street movement in September 2012
