Dear friends
The people of Tibet are in trouble. For decades, they have been persecuted and terrorized by the Chinese government, and the human rights abuses are only getting worse. Right now, the government of China is demolishing one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist academies in the world, and in the past 10 years, more than 150 Tibetans have self-immolated themselves in protest.
But none of that seems to matter to the new President of the United States, Donald Trump. In fact, he's just released his proposed budget which includes massive cuts to foreign aid programs — and would completely eliminate funding to help the people of Tibet.
This new budget proposal signals an about-face for US policy toward Tibet. For decades, the government has given financial aid to Tibetans to support human rights there, funding projects like the Ngawang Choephel Fellows educational and cultural exchange program for Tibetan refugees.
But Trump is demanding that the State Department slash its budget by 28 percent so he can spend more on military and defense. Out of all the State Department and foreign aid programs, though, Tibetan economic and social development is taking the most direct hit.
By cutting aid to Tibet, the United States is essentially abandoning the people of Tibet in their hour of need. The US government must hear from people around the world, uniting in an outcry so loud that it must listen.
Thank you,
 Miranda B.
